New feral cat program targets overpopulation issues
Dr. Ray John, CEO of Haven Humane Society said he is pleased to announce Haven's spay and neuter clinic will offer its facility for a long awaited spay and neuter program that addresses the feral cat overpopulation. The trap spay/neuter/release program has been successful all over the country.
"We're excited about this program and the fact that Dr. Rick Suther, VCA Companion Animal Hospital and our own veterinarian Dr. Cyanna Brauning, have volunteered their services to address a huge issue in our area," Dr. John said. "Thanks to Dr. Suther and a monetary donation the Northern California Veterinary Medical Association gave, this program is a reality."
He said other veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians have also volunteered time to the program.
Dr. John said the program is not for domestic cats but only feral and homeless cats. The cost of spaying or neuter is $25. Surgeries will be performed on the third Sunday of every month starting Nov. 22. All area animal rescue organizations and individuals who oversee feral cat colonies will now have an affordable means of helping reduce the feral cat population.
Feral cats will be altered, feline leukemia tested, aids tested, rabies vaccinated then returned to their colonies where they are overseen by qualified individuals and animal groups.
For more information contact Dr John at 241-1653, Dr. Brauning at 241-1658 or Dr. Suther at 225-8910.
