Arlington TX: Animal Shelter impounded senior SchnauzerX

On 2/5/09, vickie hayes <vhayes22000@yahoo.com> wrote:

Last night I noticed really really bloody urine in the floor. Mr. Dusty had been so good about going outside and holding his bathroom activities until I let him out. So much blood it freaked me out...so, fearing the worst, we ran him to the vet this am. I figured at least we could find out whats up and even if it was the worst...he would at least have had some happy times for a couple days...

Bless his little heart...he has a pretty bad ear infection (which I knew about and had already washed out the totally clogged up and can't see a hole in there ear..and treated with an antibiotic ointment), he has horrible teeth and that stinky breath and gum disease, and a urinary infection...and a big old witch wart on his behind which I thought was poop at first and kept trying to wipe his behind...LOL...

So, praise the Lord, I asked if our vet thought he would be ok going under and getting his little nuggets removed (as it turns out he is NOT neutered) and his teeth done...and he said YES...giving him a week or so on antibiotics and then getting him back in when he is feeling a little better....

Well, I cannot imagine Mr. Dusty feeling any better! He has been wildy chasing the peke foster (Paris) and the lhasa foster (Bowser) (both probably 2 ish) through the yard...He doesn't catch them...but that little long bugger sure stays close.

Dusty has kissed and kissed (and humped) this little wild lhasa (Bowser) and he is no longer being a little meanie to everyone who walks by him. It is such a joy to watch Dusty help balance out this little insecure unsocial little guy.

So we will get Dusty back home tonite and get him on drugs and feeling better so that he can get all fixed up while growing hair...LOL...think I might bathe him tonite in that Aussie horse shampoo...

And Helen, Dusty now has on a beautiful red sweater with doggies on it...and a red collar and leash with little doggies on it...

Thanks for letting me ramble..

Subj: Re: [DFWPR] Dusty, Arlington shelter

For those of you interested...I picked up Dusty, the old schnoodley mix today...

First I would like to say how beautiful the Arlington Shelter is...2nd I would like to say...man, they definitely need some help.

It took me 47 minutes to get this little boy and while I was "waiting" I watched several people come in to ask about dogs and look at dogs and because there was no one available to assist them they left...sad for the dogs...not something I will try to do at lunch again!

and before anyone fusses at me...I am not fussing at or about any employee of the shelter...I am amazed at how well they are doing after just moving...but it looks like there are so many "areas" and doors and so few people in the "adoption" area to assist people...that they could use many more people to help!

I have been in a lot of shelters and never saw this much foot traffic on a Tuesday at 2:00...I don't know what all these people do for a living that they can come in there and look at doggies but I want those jobs! LOL...

Back to Dusty (sorry, I digressed)...who is sitting happily at my feet..He was so very happy to get out and jump in the car...He is full of energy for an older boy..And he IS a sweet heart of a boy...causing no trouble, getting along with all thus far and to my amazement is sitting and kissing my "slight problem child" (who jumps out from under the bed to growl at the others)...

He appears to be housebroken...and seems to like women over men (smart boy!).

Thank you Helen for giving this boy a bath...if he was as dirty as his sweater...I can only imagine! LOL...and thank you all for the repeated posting...I love the old guys and feel so very bad for these kids as losing their families has to be bad enough in itself...

and I am very grateful to my group, Nick and Diana, for letting me save this boy...

I think when he gets hair again...he will be as beautiful outside as he is inside.

Dusty's owner died and no one would take Dusty in, so he landed in the shelter. Since Dusty's considered a senior at 10-12 years old, he probably won't make it to adoptions. He's listed on Petfinder as a Poodle. He's really a schnauzer mix, maybe even a Schnoodle! I've spent time with Dusty at the shelter and believe me, this older boy still has plenty of spunk. He's just so grateful for any attention you'll give him! There are plenty of older people who would welcome a calmer dog in their lives. Dusty would make an excellent choice and he comes with his very own sweater too! Look at that happy face! Can you imagine coming home to that smile every day?!

Arlington TX: Owner surrendered sweet Sharpei mix Jesse with mange. She needs rescuer immediately.

Arlington is a high volume facility and many pets meet their maker there. Please read about impound number 7088444 JESSE and save her if you can or forward her info to someone who may be able to.

Jesse is a shelter favorite and considered urgent. The only way she's getting out alive is probably through a rescue. Jesse is at Arlington Animal Services in Arlington, Texas which is near Dallas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arlington,_Texas.

Ask Susan Waits, Helen Miller, Dianne Watson ( RetMasterSgt@aol.com ) or the Arlington Animal Services front desk for contact information for FAAS if interested in rescuing Jesse! When I first saw Jesse, she was so frightened, she was literally hugging the ground, obviously terrified of the unknown that lay beyond the door. A little girl, crying her eyes out, was holding Jesse's leash, trying her best to pull her through the door. Over the next several days, volunteers have spent time with Jesse and this once fearful gal has absolutely blossomed. Jesse is approximately one year to 18 months-old; she loves people and appreciates attention. To date, we have not heard Jesse bark. She has an exceptional temperament, but has a medical issue; she has demodotic mange, a skin condition which is not contagious and IS treatable. Jesse was bathed today in special shampoo to help her condition and make her feel more comfortable. Jesse would make an ideal canine companion for just about anyone and volunteers are prepared to help rescue with her medical needs. Please come to meet Jesse in person, spend some time getting to know her; once you do, you'll see why we think Jesse is special! But don't wait too long. Because of her demodex, Jesse will not make it to adoptions. That's a real shame as this is such a sweet and gentle girl.

This sweetie was dumped at my elderly neighbors' house. He has no scars so it doesn't seem he was used for fighting. They have a dog and he is getting along very well with the dog. They also have 17 cats. He doesn't go after the cats unless they run from him and he has killed 2. He is very sweet and gentle. Is there a rescue out there that could take him? Dear Animal Rescues etc.
I am writing from the Storm area in Northwest Tennessee. Obion and Lake County are Devestated by the storm. We have NO POWER. We have been waking up in the cold house in the dark in the 20's. ( No heat).
I learned last night we will be WITHOUT power in much of the county another 8-10 days! Animals have Died and so have humans. ( CO posiening etc). I have given out what animal supplies I had to anyone that I could reach. We have been staying at our fire dept and going out in the field every day.
Average of 8,000 people W/Out POWER.
Due to this being only 2 counties we are NOT ABLE to get Federal AID! I dont know what to do! Trees are down, electrical lines are down and humans and animals are freezing and some to death! ( not a joke)
We are due for another severe storm coming in on Monday. We also are doing welfare checks on people and finding ther pets with them. Many cannot get out!
I have no DOG/ CAT and other food or supplies any longer to hand out.
Due to being 2 counties we are NOT able to get any Major outside help.
( Red Cross, EARS , ETC )
Please call me if you have any ideas or can donate to the victims.
I do not have power and will be onlly reachable by cell phone or this number below can be left a message.
We have had some media coverage on Channel 7 news out of Jackson TN

How could people allow this to happen to their pets? Their pets that are loyal to them until the end. Unbelievable….

Phoebe, Choo Choo and Duncan were abandoned. Their owners moved away and left the dogs home alone. The neighbors finally called and the dogs were sitting on their porch waiting for the return of their master. Phoebe is in very bad shape. She is lucky to be alive. You can see every bone in her body. The neighbors said she is deaf too. We have tried making loud noises and she doesn't turn her head at all. She is one of the sweetest dogs we've ever seen. Please help Phoebe, she will have a long recovery. She looks like she is only a year or so old. Animals at this facility are subject to euthanasia after a 5 day holding period. PLEASE call the shelter at 706-857-0679 ASAP if you are interested in adoption or rescue.

This is Nala, she was dropped off at a shopping center parking lot. Was very shy and scared at first, but has become a very loving baby! She follows me everywhere, wanting to play and get lovins! She looks to be a small Rott mix, about 4 - 6 months old. Not going to be very big.

And this is Miss Emily, she too looks to be a Rott mix, she is only about 10-11 weeks old. she was found under an abandoned house, have not been able to find her mommy or any siblings any where in the area. She is being taken care of by a short term foster due to her small size, but needs a home very soon!

Mako and Luca are two orange tabbies that have been sadly over looked at the shelter. They have been there for close to a month. They used to be quite playful and talkative. Now they show no excitement as they sit in their cages waiting. I've been told that there are many others in the back that need their chance on adoption row, so Mako and Luca need a forever home or a rescue asap. Lafayette Animal Control (Roicy Duhon) is a very small facility, but gets in close to 600-800 a month.
If you're a rescue and want to help, but don't have the space right now, I have an approved foster home (local) that will foster up to two months. Please email the volunteers at roicyvolunteers@gmail.com for any further questions.

WA (Snohomish & Skagit Counties): Rescued dogs pregnant with 1,500 puppies

Rescued dogs pregnant with 1,500 puppies*

By KOMO Staff

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - Rescuers who have saved hundreds of dogs from stinking, filth-choked puppy mills over the past few days have made an eye-popping discovery - most of the animals are pregnant and due to give birth to roughly 1,500 puppies. Some 600 abused and neglected dogs have been rescued from three different kennels since last weekend, and animal shelters were are already struggling to care for the crush of animals they already have. Now they know there are many more on the way. Animal rescue officers say a typical litter for a stressed dog is about three pups, and roughly 500 of the dogs are pregnant."We're going to be having puppies born here probably every day as long as they're here," says Animal Services Director Bud Wessman. It heaps a whole other crisis on top of the one shelters are already struggling with. After the puppies are born, rescuers will be trying to cope with more than 2,000 dogs." You can see it on TV and go 'ooh' and 'aah,' but when you walk into something like this ... that's where the reality is," says Teresa Letellier, who took part in the dog rescues. Deputies and animal control officers conducted several raids on what they call puppy mills in Skagit and Snohomish counties. They found dogs packed inside tiny crates, living in their own feces, without enough food and water - many with health problems. Conditions were so disgusting they shocked even veteran animal control officers. And all the dogs will need new homes. Families and volunteers are rushing in to help - Lorraine Monroe and her daughters want to provide foster care for some of the dogs."We need people to step up and help - families and everybody taking a dog or two," Monroe says. "We can really alleviate the problem." And that problem will only get bigger over the next few months. Five pugs found together at one puppy mill illustrate the problem, Wessman says."All five are in different stages of pregnancy, so they'll be giving birth one a week for the next several weeks," he says. Most of the dogs currently are being housed at the Skagit County Fairgrounds and the Everett Animal Shelter.

With the cost of veterinary car, medication, grooming and dog food, rescuers estimate it will cost $20 per day to take care of each animal."It will break us unless we get help from the public," said Joan Crane, co-founder of S.P.O.T. Anyone who wants to make an online donation to help pay for the dogs' care may donate to the KOMO Problem Solvers Fund. No arrests have been made yet, but it is anticipated that animal cruelty charges will be forthcoming, said Will Reichardt, chief criminal deputy with the Skagit County Sheriff's Office.

Animal control officers are asking that anyone who has purchased a dog from the Mountain View kennel belonging to Sundbergs to call the Skagit County Sheriff's office as this information may be important to their investigation. The contact is Animal Control officer JoHannah Deterding, who can be reached at (360) 336 - 9450 or at mailto:johannad@co.skagit.wa.us
