Lompoc CA: $$$ Help Urgently Needed

Update from Shadow's Fund

Last time we wrote to you we were working to raise funds for a wonderful senior dog named Shiloh, so that he could get the surgery he needed to remove a malignant tumor. I wanted to let everyone know that Shiloh's surgery went well, and he is recovering in the comfort of his new home. Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to his care!

Rosie, a sweet 10 yr old Shar Pei, was in desperate need of rescue and has been placed in a wonderful foster home where she is getting all the love and care she needs. Rosie had some minor medical expenses that we will be helping to fund, thanks to your support.

The Baldwin Park Pit Bull Rescue

On March 17th we received an alert regarding a 13 yr old pit bull named Button that was one of 8 pits in immediate danger at the Baldwin Park Shelter in Los Angeles. In fact, their lives were only guaranteed for 3 more days. We were able to place "Button" within the first 24 hours and had commitments for most of the rest of the dogs. So we committed to all of them. On Saturday, March 21st we went down to the Baldwin Park Shelter, where Ric and Phillip of the Animal Advocates Alliance (AAA) were waiting. The volunteers for AAA had spent countless hours walking these dogs, photographing them and doing everything they could to find someone that would give these dogs a chance before it was too late. We pulled 6 of the dogs out of the shelter that day, with two staying behind to get spayed.

In the days that followed we delivered these incredible dogs to their new families or foster homes. A few fosters fell through, so those dogs came to our ranch, enjoying life outside the cage and waiting for their forever families. We also learned during the week of two additional dogs in urgent need. A 1 yr old pit/shepherd mix that had less than 24 hours to be adopted, and a sweet little pit named Jordan from the East Valley Shelter whose time had also come. So, we committed to the 1 yr old male, who is now scheduled to be neutered and will go to his new home next weekend. And when we went back this past Saturday for the 2 remaining and newly spayed females, we picked up Jordan as well.

10 beautiful and wonderful dogs are now safe. That is the good news.

The bad news is, like Murphy's law says, if things can go wrong they will. And when you're dealing with 10 pit bulls chances are something is going to go wrong. A couple of the dogs have demonstrated some behavioral issues that are going to require professional training before we consider placing them in a private home. Another needed emergency surgery less than 2 days after we brought him home (turns out he got hold of a latex glove at the shelter and ate it) . Sweet little Jordan has a nasty and severe ear infection that requires medical attention and we have 4 new canine additions to our ranch whose fosters either fell through or did not work out . . .

None of the dogs will be taken back to the shelter, and we're going to seek training and medical care for those that need it. We want to place each dog in his or her forever home, and we want to do it responsibly. We're willing to see this through and provide each and every dog with whatever they need to be ready for their new family. But we need your help. We cannot do this alone and we need to raise a considerable amount of money to pay for training and medical care. If you are in a position to help, please consider making a contribution towards the care of these dogs. Click here to make a donation via PayPal. You can also mail donations to: Shadow's Fund, 2700 Cebada Cyn, Lompoc, CA 93436.

Below are photos of a few of these dogs whose lives you helped save. And I thought that this was worth saying: Someone asked why we bothered when there are so many dogs that need saving, and a need that seems endless. How could we possibly be making a difference? It made a difference to these 10. They are alive, and they have a chance to find a home with a family that will love them. We can't tell each of you enough how much we appreciate what you do, and what you help us do. Thank you.

Jill and Cody

Earth Hour 2009

YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE
This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.
For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.
This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard. Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness. In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday. We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations. VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour. Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

Subject: UPDATE - cat with broken jaw at kill shelter

We are circulating this all over. A rescue in NY said they would take him. I am hoping for something closer. The TN people are working hard to find a place down there.
I thought I had a home for this guy but they want an indoor/outdoor kitty.
I found out Tiger is not eight as the husband stated when he relinquished Tiger. Tiger is only three years old.

I just talked to the wife. I also found out that Tiger is declawed. He showed up on their doorstep and was all messed up. They took him to the vet who told them he was four weeks old. He apparently had gotten caught up in a vehicle and was missing some claws so the vet declawed him. He spent several days at the vet (why that vet did not properly set his jaw is beyond me). His jaw is healed and the vet who examined him yesterday said there is no reason to break and reset it as it would only be for cosmetic reasons.
Tiger loves women! He is shy until he gets to know you but is very loving once he does. He will cry when he is away from his people and waits at the door for someone to come home.

He is used to small dogs (Poodle and Jack Russell). No litter box issues.

This wonderful cat is in the Vermilion Parish Animal Control Center and needs to be adopted as soon as possible. Please contact Animal Aid of Vermilion at (337) 937-5888. Erath, LA

Ben is 10 years old and all of a sudden the life he knows was destroyed. Ben lived with his family since he was a baby. They had him neutered, declawed and loved. His mom got very sick. She has cancer. And all Ben wanted is to be close to her. But her husband didn't want him to sit on her chest. We don't know why but his excuse is that the cat knows that his wife is dying and that's why he is sitting on her. It is proven that dogs and cats have instincts that we just dream of and maybe Ben knew what's going on with his mom. But why isn't he aloud to comfort her? Ben is sitting at Vermilion Animal Control and waiting for somebody who believes in him and will give him a good home for the rest of his life. His time is very limited. Please help if you can. http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=13332279

This pet is up to date with routine shots. This pet is already house trained & declawed. This pet has been altered.

UPDATE
hi, well not really. he was excellent getting bathed. he is a super boy. iwent and talked to the guys that had him, evidently up until 2 mos ago hedog had a decent life. he was used to being inside most of the time. itseems to me he just has severe abandonment issues. he crates wonderffully.he is in my garage now crated, doesnt mind it, hasnt really chewed at crate.but hates chain link fencing. the kennel had him in 3 different runs and heeither tore thru them or almost did. very weird, so for the night he is ok,but i am in a residential neighborhood, already over the "legal" limit and 3of them are pits so i have to be very careful. he is safe for the night, itsso funny because you can tell he is feeling good, he just acts like he isfeeling good being off the chain, all clean, full belly. so please ifsomething changes let me know, its not fair to him and i just have so muchgoing on dont want to make any errors, you know. we get sloppy when we areoverwhelmed, atleast i do. thanks so much for checking on us. carol

Apple Valley CA: Nursing Mom dog misses her puppies

--- On Tue, 3/24/09, XHelpingPawsx@aol.com <XHelpingPawsx@aol.com> wrote:

Does anyone know of any puppies without a mom?

I just wanted to get let everyone know that if they know of any orphaned puppies that need a sweet mom, we have one. It seems this very sweet dog was dumped at our store out here and although there are no signs of her puppies she has really bagged up with a lot of milk and she seems to want to find her babies. We spent the last 2 days all day from 5 am to well after dark searching the desert around where she was dumped but have not found any. She has taken me over many miles on walks. She acts like she is going somewhere and has to get there but after we walk for miles in the freezing cold she just stops.

I think who ever dumped her had already gotten rid of the puppies somewhere else and she is just looking for them. She was very thin but has lots and lots of milk and is getting more and more because I have been feeding her very well because she was so thin and she loves to eat. Because of this she really has a lot of milk.

Just thought I would get this out there in case someone knows of some puppies that are either being bottle fed or are going to be put down because they don't have a mom. I know how much work it takes to bottle feed and care for young pups without a mom and it's better if a substitute mom can be found. I wish I could have found 1 a few times when I needed 1. Plus she misses her babies and it might help if she could mother some puppies in need.

Please let me know if anyone needs her help.

Here is another heartbreaking example of why we get upset at some of the homes shelter puppies go to: because too many people who take them just dump them when they become inconvenient. Paris is yet another victim: doomed to die because the "adopter" who cooed over her as a puppy now can't be bothered with her as a young adult. PLEASE CROSSPOST ANDREA'S PLEA AND PIX TO HELP PARIS MAKE IT OUT ALIVE.

Subject: EXTREMELY URGENT!!! TIME IS UP!! : Tragically sad rottie A0866779 South L.A.

Tragically sad. Devastatingly depressed. Heart-breaking and heart-broken.
And only three years old. I guess we need to hear this story yet again. Adopted as a puppy -- returned three years later -- Why? "No Time."

I found the time -- it really wasn't difficult. The time to take her out for a walk. The time to rub her curly coat (like a frill around her neck), a very thick almost shepherdy coat. And I found the time to see her eyes light up.

This was not the same dog that cowered in the corner of her kennel, trying to make herself invisible. Not the same dog that her "owners" dumped on March 7th. Not the same dog that they obviously stuck in a yard and overfed for three years -- forgetting her, ignoring the light in this dog's eyes until it was extinguished from neglect.
Her name is Paris (RED-LISTED!!!!! on March 29th -- so extremely urgent, A0866779, spayed, 3-years old), the City of Light in France. We did not speak of the French yesterday -- just of sniffing and munching treats and other dog things of interest.
Paris is the perfect lady -- gentle as could be on our walk, prancing beside me, never pulling.

If you can help Paris, save the life of this gentle soul, please contact the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or -0119 AT ONCE!!!

And please, please let me know as well.
Thanks for caring about shelter animals,
Andrea

I had sent this email out earlier, and some of you wanted to see pictures of Bridgett the Jack Russell Terrier mix.
The pictures were taken with a camera phone so they are not very good. It’s hard to get pictures of a wiggly puppy!
She is about 7 months old and seems to be deaf. She is being trained on some hand signals.
She needs a good home with owners who will work with her and give her a great home.
If you know of someone who would take this little girl, please let me know!
Wendy

A Rising Tide of Ocean Debris and What We Can Do About It

Ocean Conservancy's report A Rising Tide of Ocean Debris and What We Can Do About It reveals all the findings of the 2008 Cleanup in its one-of-a-kind Marine Debris Index, the world's only country-by-country, state-by-state breakdown of trash in our ocean, lakes, rivers, and streams. This comprehensive body of data compiled each year at the Cleanup has informed major legislation and inspired improvements in packaging and other technologies as well as expanded recycling efforts in communities large and small. The report also zeroes in on the startling impacts of ocean trash on wildlife and ocean ecosystems. And it identifies marine debris as one of the stresses compromising the ocean's ability to adapt to climate change.Together, the Marine Debris Index and the report's recommendations provide a roadmap for eliminating marine debris altogether by reducing it at the source, changing the behaviors that cause it, and supporting better policy. Armed with knowledge about the most prevalent components of marine debris, elected officials can make informed policy decisions, community leaders can tailor and expand recycling and other trash-reduction programs, corporate decision-makers can improve technology and reduce packaging, and individuals can recycle, reuse, or properly dispose of trash to keep these items out of the ocean in the first place.
