Hi Liz,

This has been a concern in our industry forever but more in the past 2 years when the crisis began. We all breathe a little sigh of relief when we don’t get a direct hit in these areas. The problem is that we can’t predict where the hurricane will hit and having people out in mass to board these homes causes a lot of logistical problems, manpower issues and causes municipal code violations. We can’t leave the homes boarded indefinitely because of blight and a boarded up home is a huge red flag for drug dealers, prostitution rings, dog fighting rings (they like to house their fighters in vacant homes), etc. It really is a catch 22 that has no easy answers. And yes, it’s a hazard for the people who do own homes in those areas. If it were me and having lived in hurricane prone areas for most of my adult life, I’d probably take it upon myself to board the vacant neighboring house…

Thanks for passing this along. It is a problem that needs to be addressed.

LA (Jefferson Parish) Cat Trapping

Subject: LA (Jefferson Parish) Cat Trapping: 300 block Homestead (Metairie) and also Brooklyn Ave. (bet. Jefferson Hwy. & River Rd.)

Someone is known to be trapping on the 300-400 block of Homestead in Metairie and turning cats in to the shelter on the West Bank, NOT the East Bank shelter.

Cats also have been trapped on Brooklyn Ave. (between Jefferson Hwy. & River Road). Several spayed and neutered eartipped cats went missing from there a month ago soon after they were fixed.

Anyone missing cats please check for lost cats at Jefferson Parish shelters (East Bank and West Bank) and at LA/SPCA, as well as all animal shelters in the area.

Los Angeles: Charlotte, amazing story of survival, former bait dog needs foster or forever ASAP

One month ago (April 30th)

Charlotte was rescued from Downey Shelter (CA).

She had spent over seven months of her young life

in a cold, concrete cell, while the court case for her previous owner dragged on!

Charlotte's In-take photo; mauled by 3 dogs... so sad!

She had been beaten and used as a bait dog by him.

Despite this horrific treatment Charlotte, somehow, maintained

a sweet, loving, & submissive disposition.

She became a shelter favorite and was often allowed to run off-leash in building two.

The time came when the court case was over and she was no longer needed as "evidence"

...therefore, she was scheduled for euthanization.

I just couldn't allow this to happen to her, not after all she'd endured,

not after seeing what a love-bug, kiss-bull she was,

not after I KNEW she would make a wonderful pet

if she were only allowed to be the happy dog she was meant to be!

She has spent the last three weeks at "Green Dog" in Los Angeles

where she has been socialized with other dogs and learning how to be in a pack.

She already knew basic commands, was good on the leash,

and was great indoors in an apartment or home.

She showed no signs of separation anxiety, no chewing or destructive behavior what-so-ever.

She loves all people and children.

Apparently, now she can even go on walks and become mates with other dogs.

I, her rescuer, have recently found out that I am losing my job and my home!!

Therefore, I can no longer afford to keep her at Green Dog and have no place to keep her myself.

Won't you PLEASE give Charlotte the chance she deserves?

We just CANNOT allow her to end up back at a shelter...

not now, not after as far as she has come!!

Hi everyone, I was at the Agoura Hills Shelter yesterday when two young women brought in a 15 year old gray/black kitty. Another victim of the downturn in the economy....The one woman had to move in with her sister and the sister would not allow her to keep her pet kitty that she had loved since the cat was a kitten. She had this beautiful cat for 15 years and then her sister made her get rid of it!! Don't know if I would talk to my sister after that .... let alone live with her! But anyway this poor woman was very upset and I told her I would network her cat for her. I didn't have my camera with me so I am attaching the shelter photo which is not very good. She is a beautiful Domestic Short Hair, 15 years old and the woman described her as really sweet and talkative. Please let me know if you are able to save this kitty so I can call the woman and assure her the cat is in a new safe loving environment. Please help if you can... it just breaks my heart!

I have seen Chip and he is a very friendly, young, playful and small Dalmatian. Chip was hit by a car and the male owner took him to the Plano shelter to be put to sleep because he did not want to spend the money to take him to a vet. The staff told him that he was such a young small Dal that if the leg could not be saved they would amputate it. And the owner said "I can't have a dog with three legs" so he turned around and left poor mangled Chip at the shelter. The most caring staff I have ever seen is at the Plano animal services and they did what was best for this happy go lucky little fella..

after pull fees, paypal tax, and boarding to date-i have 850.00 left. For a paid foster, that would prob. be enough to hang on to him till he got a home...but in boarding that is time runing out pretty fast..
So, from what i see of him he is very much a dog who has never had a "home"-he is very alert and always looking around to see what is going on--in case he has to make a run for it.
He was very docile with my other girl rescue dog--i have not walked him next to a boy but he really is showing no signs of dog agression. have not cat tested yet, am going to do that this week.
when this very nice girl has had him in the courtyard at bark, she noticed that he does seem to be eyeballing the gate as a way to get out--so i have to find him a home or foster with inescapable yard OR indoors/ crating when gone.
I think he would be ok with older kids- but young children who might suddenly scream or run around in a crazed way that children do when very young might scare him into a ball.
He is a quiet boy, very thoughtful, he acts happy when you approach his cage. He has no idea he is one of THE luckiest dogs in L.A. or even the whole of southern california--but that is what is so touching...everyone helped the plain brown fogotten boy--and i think he will be a very loyal friend to whomever he connects with.
attached a few pic i took at bark--if you cannot see i will send one at a time (some people cant un zip the zip!!)
i am so sorry this took me a few days to get back to you-i hope the advertisement will help --and i wanted to sort thru all the possibliites to see if i missed something, but for now he is at Bark Ave.

LAST HOURS FOR SERGIO

I went to say good bye to sergio today as he was scheduled to be killed. times up. So they let me spend some time with him in the courtyard. The second he saw the fence to FREEDOM outside he tried over and over to crawl under the bar. He jumped up-KNOWING and smelling the joy that is outside the fence. I had to keep pulling him back--no Sergio, you can't go there--but part of me wanted to say--RUN SERGIO RUN--escape your death sentence. But all he would find outside alone is being run over in the fwy, or starving. The world is cruel with no loving guardian to care for a dog or cat. And everyone keeps looking for love and validation on Match dot com! Romance!Like that will fill any void? There is tons of love-here at North Central Shelter--nothing but cage after cage of living beings who would cherish just to spend time with you--despite all your flaws. Despite how much money you have. They crave one touch, to connect to just BE with a person. Sergio was bred in someones backyard by people who did not care. He was raised by someone who did not care. He was abandoned or escaped from cruelty because of people who did not care. And he will die at the shelter tomorrow because nobody came to save him. I spent so much time with him in the courtyard, that the pull and kill list got finished and they forgot about him. So he is rescheduled for tomorrow first thing in the morning with the new list of kills. That gives him about 11 hours from this post to be saved from being taken back, cowering with a catch pole and get a needle of "fatal plus" up his vein. Sergio, if he dies tomorrow at the shelter will just finish off a time on earth that is highlighted by HUMAN FAILURE. Man's best friend, betrayed, abandoned and then destroyed. Sergio, we loved you, we tried to get some help. Los Angeles, "City of Angels". So misnamed, unless you are referring to the MILLIONS of animals who lost their lives here due to human negligence, apathy, cruelty and coldbloodedness.
