Rockville MD: Video. Young Cinnamon Chow boy in shelter

From: Kricket McCarthy <McWagRescue@gmail.com>

Subject: Rockville, MD Young Cinnamon Chow

PERMISSION TO CROSS POST
This sweet boy was surrendered to the shelter where I work yesterday. He is 1 year and 3 months old. While he may not be the best bred and certainly can use a bath, his vet records show his previous owner provided completed and consistent care. They gave him up because the father got a job with the State Department and are moving overseas. I believe they did use the shelter as a last resort because they are leaving in just a couple of day. He was brought in by the father and a boy around 9 and they were obviously very close. But the Chow is young and will adjust to a new family and the boy is young but probably won't forget that family members can easily be left behind. (sorry to be such a cynic)

Here is a short video.

He must have known when they were leaving because he wanted to go back to where he last saw them. Sad... He was put in the lower kennel where he will not be seen. I am not suppose to go back to work until Sunday. He is not in any immediate danger but I am afraid he will get depressed there and deteriorate so I am hoping to get him out ASAP.
I am also still hoping someone will be able to help with the pretty little cream girl in Somerset County, MD. She is about the same age. I do not know about her vetting yet but this boy definitely is neutered and UTD on everything.
Unfortunately, until I have more adoptions finalized, I have no place for either of them.

OK, I know I am stressed and unusually cranky lately, but I am about to lose it. This gorgeous FIV+ cat is headed to a feral colony Sunday. The woman who has Bingo has made her live in a crate for G-d knows how long and is convinced that a "managed" feral colony her friend feeds is a reasonable solution for this cat. Um, gee, despite the fact that if she has to fight to defend herself she will pass FIV on to another cat and the fact that she herself might become symptomatic from the stress of living on the street, I guess there are some good features of life in a feral colony which are escaping me. Is there anyone who can help this cat? I have a soft spot for FIV+ cats, but my life situation won't permit me to take her. Anyone? Please pass this on. Sunday is it for Bingo, and it is just irresponsible to other cats to put her out there. Bingo is dog-friendly.

FIV in cats is such a non-event. I have three FIV+ cats, and if you saw them, you would think one could be on the cover of Cat Fancy, and the other two are big, strapping boys. The last FIV+ cat I had lived for years and years and died of a totally unrelated issue. Bingo will make someone a great family member, but the trick is, Earline needs to find that someone. Because her neighbor is convinced Bingo would love living in a feral colony. Yikes! Can you help Bingo? And just in case you love the FIV+ kitties, I have an orange, declawed girl in a vet clinic in Dallas who is on thin ice. I could get you a two-fer!!Contact Earline on Bingo, and please pass this on! efgtexas@yahoo.com

Here's the info on Bingo. She is about a year old (picture attached), has been spayed and had all shots. My neighbor found her, and paid for all vet services, but she has four cats and can't keep her. Bingo is fine with dogs, but since she's FIV positive she'll need to be an inside cat. If we don't find a home for Bingo soon, my neighbor will be taking her to a shelter - and we all know what that means. Thank you!

My dad left me, my brother Chopper, who is a small Rottie mix, and our mom. Now our house is in foreclosure because Mom can't make the payments by herself. Subject: please save Mama dog (golden retriever/irish setter?) and her puppies
To: hummingbirdj@sbcglobal.net
Hello,
First may I say thank you for all you do to save these beautiful animals. I need help! On Monday, 7/20/09, I noticed a skeletal Red dog, perhaps golden retriever/irish setter mix dog going into what looked like an abandoned garage (Littlerock, CA). I went to the door and knocked even though the property had boarded up windows etc. Unfortunately under the wooden porch that I was standing on was one of her puppies. She came around and jumped on me grazing her tooth which broke the skin on my arm. She was only protecting her puppies. I had to call animal control due to quarantine. This momma and her puppies are on hold until 7/31/09 or perhaps longer until the release from whomever. I called AV dog and cat rescue and they put their name on the dogs but don't have any room at all. This rescue asked me to start calling around to save these dogs from certain death. The puppies have just opened their eyes (2 weeks old?). They were picked up on 7/20/09 by animal control and you can view them at
http://www.animalcare.lacounty.gov/ ID #A4008942 (momma's) puppies are above her on the list. She is at the Lancaster site so click on that to get to her. I have called numerous rescues out here and everyone is full. I am praying to God that I can find someone to save her and her puppies that were left abandoned. Please let me know either way as I feel responsible as I found them. If you are interested please call the Lancaster Shelter to put your rescue's name on her and her puppies 661-940-4190. Time is of the essence as they will be put to sleep somewhere after 7/31/09. Again thank you so much for all you do. This has become a terrible time for not only people but animals with our economic downturn. I am unable to take them as I am only allowed 2 dogs and the shelter will not let me have them.
Take care and thank you for your time,
Jennifer Grieve

New Orleans, Louisiana: Press Release. The Humane Society of Louisiana reports re Vermilion Parish

News Release: For Immediate Use
Contact Person: Jeff Dorson (HSL Director, 901-268-4432)
July 28, 2009
Humane Group Documents Problems at Vermilion Animal Shelter Group
Asks for Gas Chamber to be Discontinued and Improvements Made
(Abbeville, LA) -- The Humane Society of Louisiana recently toured the Vermilion Parish Rabies Control Center, located at 11303 Pioneer Road, in Kaplan, and submitted its four-page report to parishadministrators. The group, which has been inspecting animal shelters for the past 20 years, evaluated the operations at the parish-run shelter and centered its findings and concerns on three principle areas: the shelter’s method of euthanasia, the facility’s adoption protocol, and the substandard housing of felines.
The Humane Society of Louisiana has a long history of tangling with government officials in Vermilion Parish. The group, then known as Legislation in Support of Animals, filed an injunction against the rabies control board back in 1991 for allegedly mistreating their sheltered animals. The case was eventually heard in 1993 by Judge Jules Edwards, who ruled that the parish must comply with the state animal cruelty statutes and maintain certain basic standards of care.
“During our recent inspection, we were shocked to discover that the parish has been and continues to use a gas chamber that is not properly functioning. The chamber’s door is ajar and cannot be sealed properly without bracing it with a screwdriver. The chamber also sits at a tilt, so its effectiveness is definitely in question,“ says Jeff Dorson, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Louisiana. “We were told that the employees often have to run the chamber’s cycle twice, in order to kill the animals placed inside. This is a terrible ordeal for the animals subjected to this treatment and for the employees forced to watch,” adds Dorson.
Besides questioning the effectiveness of the current chamber, the issue of using carbon monoxide to kill surplus animals is also being questioned by a discerning public on a national scale. “The public no longer wants animals to be gassed to death. It is an unpleasant experience for the animals, for the employees, who are forced to administer these toxic fumes, and for the citizens who pay for this outdated and unpopular method of killing surplus animals. Plus, the parish has been knowingly using a chamber that is in disrepair and probably has not performed its basic functions adequately. Carbon monoxide chambers must be routinely calibrated, cleaned regularly, maintained, tested, and kept in excellent condition. We seriously question if this administration has adequately maintained this outdated machine to perform the tasks demanded of it,” remarks Dorson.
Within its report, the group has filed a formal public records request to review the chamber’s maintenance records and any and all repair work orders.
“We have been told that the parish administration just authorized the procurement of another gas chamber for more than $17,000. The only acceptable way to euthanize sheltered animals in the 21st century is by lethal injection. I believe that if this administration wishes to continue using outdated methods and equipment, they will hear from people from around the country within a very short period of time. We have withheld publishing our report publicly, hoping that the administration would reach out to us to discuss these sensitive issues. But since we have not received a response within a reasonable period of time, we are releasing our findings to the public so they can form their own opinion on the operations of this shelter” adds Dorson.
The humane society also found fault with the shelter’s short and confusing animal adoption procedures and the substandard housing conditions of the shelter’s feline population. Dogs and cats are not adopted from the shelter. All adoptable animals are turned over to a local humane society called Animal Aid for Vermilion Area, which, in turn, oversees the adoption of animals. “This is a very confusing protocol that does not seem to serve a viable purpose,“ says Dorson."I am not familiar with any other shelter doing business like this in the entire state. As a public facility, it would make sense that the public be allowed to adopt any animal of its choice, rather than going through a second party,“ Dorson says.
The group also found many problems with the housing of the shelter’s feline population. Many of the shelter cats are housed in several large wire and wooden cages. The cages, because of their construction, cannot be properly cleaned or disinfected, according to Dorson. According to the humane society’s report, all cats kept in this type of housing environment are exposed and susceptible to numerous infectious diseases. Unless they are nursing cats with kittens, cats should be isolated until adopted, reclaimed, or euthanized, or only placed in a group housing setting if the area is clean and the cats have been vaccinated. Group housing of cats in this manner is deemed unacceptable by national shelter guidelines.
The Humane Society of Louisiana, based in New Orleans, is one of the largest humane organizations in the state with more than 10,000 supporters. The group advocates for the humane treatment of animals and operates the Dixieland Animal Care and Evacuation Center in Tylertown, Mississippi. For more information on its programs and services, please visit their website at http://www.humanela.org/ or call1-888-6-humane.

I got a call over the weekend from a little old lady that lives in a trailer park in Rancho Dominguez. I previously trapped and fixed several ferals that she feeds at her trailer. She has about four or five. She said that the management at the trailer park took a black fluffy cat that had been abandoned in an empty trailer for a couple of weeks to the Carson Shelter. She said the cat had once belonged to someone else but they abandoned it outside and another family took it in. When that family moved they just left the cat with no food or water for days. She said it has a great personality (sweet as pie) and she is totally heartbroken that it was taken to the shelter. Is there anyone that can help this poor twice abandoned kitty find a real home? I’d be willing to donate $100 to anyone willing to pull from the shelter. The impound number is A4010489. She was brought in on 7/23 and her time is up. Everyone knows being at the Carson Shelter doesn’t give this poor girl much of a chance, especially being a black kitty so I wanted to get this plea out to as many people as possible. You can see by the photo she is mostly reddish black. She’s already in the impound area in the back with nobody from the public looking at her. I pointed that out to the shelter but they told me she was ‘online’. It doesn’t help that she looks terrified in the photo. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

LISBON, OHIO: time is up on Wednesday for many of these dogs

Subject: LISBON, OH - time is up on Wednesday for many of these dogs

URGENT -- PLEASE CROSSPOST!

The Columbiana County Dog Pound is a small, rural animal control facility located in Lisbon, Ohio.
It is a kill shelter and as much as they try not to euthanize on a weekly basis, they are beyond full at this time
and will have to euthanize by the end of this week if they can't find rescues to take some of these dogs.

Each week it becomes more and more of a challenge to place these wonderful dogs with rescue organizations because many rescue organizations are filled beyond capacity right now. But how many of us out there look at the pictures and then end up saying "what's one more?!" There's ALWAYS room for one more when you look at how reasonable it is to pay the Pound fee and have the dog spayed/neutered, and given a rabies vaccination before taking it in.

These beautiful dogs are in need of rescuing.
If you can help rescue or adopt ANY of them, please contact the pound ASAP.
If you feel that this shelter is too far from your home base to help out, then please at least forward this email
on to your contacts, because hopefully one of them may be in the position to help out these dogs.

The pictures of the dogs currently listed on the adoptable page can be viewed below and at
http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/OH417.html
ALL dogs that aren't adopted or committed to be taken by a rescue
will be euthanized before the end of this work week.

Limited transport assistance is available to get the dogs transported throughout the state of Ohio and a little beyond,
but one of the two group moderators MUST be notified to check to see if transport can be arranged.
Moderator: kkennett@cinci.rr.com,

This is a VERY rescue-friendly pound, but it's very short-staffed.
If you're interested in any of the dogs, you MUST contact the pound by BOTH phone and email.
Please leave a phone message if you aren't able to reach an employee.

The Pound charges a small nominal pull fee to rescue organizations (organizations either licensed in Ohio or who have 501(c)(3) status). (The adoption fee is normally $60.00.) BUT MANY OF THESE DOGS ARE NOW FULLY SPONSORED, which means that their spay/neuter, adoption fees, and basic vaccines will be paid for by the sponsor if the dog is rescued by an approved non-profit rescue.

Please email Gabe Eber, a dedicated pound volunteer, at g_eber@yahoo.com
if you have any questions right now and he will assist you.

Subject: Abandoned Dogs at Foreclosed Property in Yucaipa -UPDATE
I wanted to give an update on the situation in Yucaipa:
After contacting a colleague in the Yucaipa area yesterday regardingthe situation I learned about on our network yesterday, immediate action was taken. As of this morning, three of the five dogs are safe. The remaining two dogs could not be located at the time rescuers were at the property. The three dogs will be evaluated by veterinary personnel and the long journey to preparing these dogs for forever homes will begin. Sadly, some of the dogs are not well socialized, some are quite fearful. Not quite feral, but very very close.
Rescuers will return to the property to try and locate the remaining two dogs. The dogs may be entering the house through openings in the walls made by the dogs.
Rescuers have been careful not to disturb the property as some vandalism has occurred. But rest assured, concerned individuals are on the case.
If anyone needs further information or would care to help with veterinary care or boarding fees for these dogs, please contact me irectly at BigDogsRescue@gmail.com and I will forward your request.
In this economic times, we must continue to assist financially those rescuers who "step up to the plate" to help solely because their help was needed.
Once again, we see the power of networking. Thanks to all who brought this matter to everyone's attention.

Subject: Fw: PTS list - Merced, CA Shelter - Part 1

This is Part 1 of the list. There is a second list in a separate e-mail. The Merced shelter and its dogs are beyond desperate. They have 150 kennels and 150 dogs.........many are going to lose their lives and these will be the first to go. If you can help anyone, please contact me asap at this e-mail or by cell at (209) 606-3045.
All were vaccinated on intake with DHPP and Bordetella and will receive a rabies vaccination when they leave. Some are spayed/neutered. Our vet has offered to spay/neuter these or any dog in the shelter for rescue. If that is the only way you can take someone, let me know asap and I will get them on the list for spay/neuter. But if you can take anyone and that is not necesary, please take them asap as we truly have no room.
We will transport as soon as you let us know you can take someone.
If there is no one on this list you can help, please visit Pet Harbor and see if there is anyone you can help. Please look at the stray dogs, not adotables as they rarely move those past their hold over to adoptables.
Thank you in advance for helpong save some of these very deserving dogs.
