West Los Angeles: GOOD NEWS! Walker is a very sweet Sharpei mix (maybe collie) ADOPTED!

UPDATE: CHECK OUT ROBERT CABRAL'S BLOG POST RE WALKER WALKING OUT OF THE SHELTER!!!

Subject: very sweet Sharpei Mix (maybe collie) needs you - read below

Hi,

This is a story that needs your help... Many of you know me and the dogs I save and advocate for. This is a compelling story. PLEASE, don't go back and attack the shelter system, as they are making the dog available to rescue, not killing him as others might. The fault here lies with the civilian who broke the rules and put his hand into a cage and then reported it. There is no fault to the LA Shelter or the staff, nor the dog....

read on...

Walker is a super sweet and totally cool dog, sharpie, possibly collie mix, he's young and fun and has a smile that will melt your heart. He passed my temperament test with flying colors. I've tested hundreds of dogs with 100% success.... This guy would land in the top percentile.... Walker showed no signs of dominance or aggression at any time. His story is messed up and he's made to pay the price for human stupidity. Someone put their hand into his cage and Walker got excited.... somehow in all of this commotion, the guys hand got scraped.... NOT BIT... Because of this and a risk of liability he's on the short list... He's got 5 days.

I personally re-enacted the scenario and played VERY rough with Walker through the bars of his kennel, and he did not bite or even mouth me. In the yard I put him through a thorough behavior assessment and he is fine with handling, corrections, playing, etc.

He's got 5 days at the west LA shelter...

If you have any questions about Walker, call me, email me - contact me. Don't let this guy go....

Thanks for reading... watch his video and you'll see. He's a total Super Star....

Robert

A1050027- Walker ***RED LISTED***

Walker is a 1 year old, male, Chinese Sharpei Mix that came to the shelter as a stray on July 22nd 2009.

This larger than life young guy has energy to burn!!! He is very playful and loves to run.

Walker is very good with other dogs that can keep up with his energy level..... He takes correction from his handler well and is food motivated.

Walker was temperament tested by trainer Robert Cabral for the K9 Connection program. He passed with flying colors!!!!

Unfortunately Walker is available to rescue only because of a citizen who decided to put his arms in the kennels and believes he may have got bitten or scraped by Walker. Because skin was broken, he had to be placed on quarantine. Now ones person stupidity may cost Walker his life!!

Please see to below link for video of Walker...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9hR09ukVSc

Walker is RED LISTED!! His time is up..... He needs to be adopted by 5pm Wednesday October 7th 2009.

NJ to NY: Carolina Cockers Trip to NJ/NYC

From: Staff, Carolina Cockers Rescue <info@carolinacockers.com>
Date: Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 5:03 AM
Subject: Carolina Cockers Trip to NJ/NYC

SAVE A LIFE
There are currently a great number of dogs in need in SC who could greatly benefit from our help. Many in the Greenwood shelter, some in Clinton and several already here at CCR who need great homes. The homes we place them in up north are fantastic! We already have several homes that are waiting for some of these wonderful homeless animals that we have here in SC. All funds, if any, raised from adoption donations go towards helping our cockerkids with heartworm treatments and other needs. If you can help us by donating to allow us to make this trip on the 10th we (and the dogs we save) would truly appreciate it!

Carolina Cockers Trip To NJ/NYC in September
12 Adopted in September

12 great babies found new homes in September. Tanner-cocker Dash-cocker Benji-yorkie Pavarotti-havanese Koda-poodle Pitch-cocker Pressley-cocker Krystal-terrier Ginger-cocker stayed in foster there and was adopted this past weekend to a great home! Korbel-poodle, now lives with my in laws in Chapin, SC. Doodles-yorkie mix went home the weekend before. Cassandra-cocker also went home last weekend.

Carolina Cockers Trip To NJ/NYC Oct 10-11
2 Adoption Days Planned

Carolina Cockers will be in Mahwah, NJ on October 10th for pickup and adoptions. Our wonderful foster mom Kate is opening up her home again to make this possible for all these wonderful dogs. Carolina Cockers will be in WashingtonTownship, NJ on October 11th. We have been asked to participate in an adoption day on Sunday. We are extremely excited!

We Need HELP!
We need donations to make the trip to NJ/NYC

Last month we found homes for 12 dogs, not all cockers, but several were in the NJ/PA/NY area. We rented a van and made the trip, stopping twice to walk everyone and clean up a few messy crates. We learned a great deal from this trip and would like to try it again. We have an excellent foster Mom in NJ who allows us to hold adoption meet and greets at her home and babysits our dogs in her garage overnight. The van rental was $260 plus a $50 deposit, then gas was $125 each way. The hotel which was the Motel 8 near our foster Mom was $155 for two nights. Tolls on the PA turnpike and the Jersey Turnpike totals around $20. Visit http://www.carolinacockers.com/chipin.php to help us out!

Davida,
The rescue went well! It was very quick - in and out! The place was horendous,
filled with bugs, and smelled horrible. I have no idea really how the rabbits
were in any sort of decent shape given their surroundings. There were bugs all
around them and in their cages. We checked them out, gave them hair cuts as
needed, cleaned them up, treated them with Revolution, and got them lots of
pellets, fresh veggies, and water. They ate like they had never seen food
before. Both need to put on some weight. We have yet to name them, but the
hollad lop that we found in the kitchen is a male, brown and white, and
incredibly friendly. He smushed down flat for pets for as long as I was
willing to give them. He came running to the cage door when I came into the
apartment to rescue him. The other rabbit was found in a bedroom and is a
beautiful black rabbit, a rex mix female. She was surprisingly clean. She was
most happy to see the hay and sat down to eat hay for a couple hours last
night. Both of them looked happy this morning when I left for work. They
polished off their food overnight.
We're going to give them both a couple weeks to adjust, put on some weight,
and then they'll be scheduled for their spay/neuter surgeries and then put up
for adoption!

about 5lbs and should be about 7lbs.

Subject: URGENT! NEED TO SAVE THE SWEETEST DIABETIC KITTY!
Dear friends,
sorry we dont have time to separate who gets this and who doesnt. trying desperately to raise funds tonight to save a sweet 3-4 yr old diabetic cat. We took on a little diabetic cat from an owner surrender, someone who could no longer care for their cat due to illness. When we saw this sweet kitty we could not turn our back on her. We already have another diabetic older kitty so we've been through this before and know the drill. but this poor little thing has been so neglected. its so sad!
Little did we know how bad off she was including diabetic and other issues. but We got her stable we thought. But tonight she ended up in the er with a Blood Glucose off the map, and vomiting for hours. this is life threatening and we have to keep her in the er tonight. if we take her home she will not survive. she is so young and sweet, we have to save her. her prognosis is excellant, but we just have to find the right dose of insulin to stablize her, which we will do tomorrow at our regular vet, but for tonight they have her on iv fluids and are doing blood tests, and testing for a possible urinary tract infection. She might also have a urinary blockage but we dont know yet. so far her vet bill is $750, probabaly will be a bit more. trying to keep it within reason.
If anyone can make a small tax deductible donation you can pay pal under planetheart@aol.com or to:

Ventura County CA: Shadow - Blue nose pit needs immediate foster or permanent home!! - URGENT!!

From: Allison Dyer <AllisonD@animaladvocatesalliance.org>
Date: Sun, Sep 27, 2009 at 6:15 PM
Subject: Shadow - Blue nose pit needs immediate foster or permanant home!! - URGENT!!

Shadow is a gorgeous 2 to 3 year old neutered male blue pitbull. He weighs about 60 pounds. Shadow is very sweet, medium energy, and absolutely wonderful with children of all ages, and loves everyone! He has had some training, is not yet fully socialized with other dogs, but the trainer said with a little work, he'll be fine. He loves to ride in the car, enjoys playing in the yard and taking walks, and one of his favorite activities is cuddling on the couch with you and watching your favorite TV show! Shadow is quiet, good in the house, non-destructive, sweet, smart and willing. He is submissive with people and is just an all around love-bug. His name should really be cuddles!!
Volunteers from Animal Advocates Alliance, rescued Shadow from the Camarillo Animal Shelter on the day he was to be euthanized. We found him a great foster home for the summer, while the families' kids were out of school. To give us more time to find a new home for Shadow, the family agreed to give us till the end of September. The Mom and Dad work long hours, and also travel on business, the daughter left for college, and the son has begun his final year in high school and is not home much. The summer was great because they were home with him a lot. Shadow has become a true pet.
As beautiful as he is sweet, Shadow needs a home that he can call his own, where he can be loved and treasured. Shadow needs a new family to love! Shadow needs a foster or permanant home immediately. We are running out of time on this sweet boy!! Please post and cross-post. Lets prove this network can save another one!!

I've commented on the dogs I've personally met, but I feel so bad for those I haven't. Just because I haven't commented, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them. I just don't know them yet.
The little Tibetan Terrier, Bentley, needs to get out of the shelter as soon as possible, if he's to have a chance. He was traumatized at being dumped by his owner and desperately needs re-socializing and it's not going to happen at the shelter, unfortunately. Once he gets his confidence and trust in humans back, he'll be extremely adoptable!

Diego now has his own Facebook Fan Club! Please join and pass around!

Diego asked me to start it for him b/c I wanted to start giving his own updates! So please join in on his discussion so you can hear him out, get the updates from his point of view, and tell him how you feel.
If I have accidentally double addressed you, please let me know right away. So many people are asking for Diego updates and this is the best way to get them regularly. On that note, if you are sick and tired of hearing about this guy, don't feel badly. Just simply ask to be removed. We're all about support and getting a home for Diego and do not want to annoy anyone. If on the other hand you have a network of your own, please share.
Diego still needs a home. The donations will first go to his continued boarding, but we're hoping to find a foster or better yet, forever home sooner than later. Cage living has been tough for him. He makes a lot of progress outside of that environment, so please help us expedite in any way you can.
The behavioral assessment with Brandon Fouché was amazing! To quote Brandon "he's a great dog, very adoptable, he's never been in a fight, very smart, very handsome, and wanting to learn." Diego still needs a little rehab but he is very ready for an amazing home.
We are still collecting donations at
http://savediego.chipin.com/diego-dog-rescue
Diego and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
xxKathyp.s. IMPORTANT NOTE - shockingly, the animal rescue world has its fair share of madness and drama and we are trying to steer clear of that. Let's just say, always best to confirm anything re: Diego with me, whether it be how the donations are being spent, where he is, how is got there, where he's going and what his status is. While there are literally dozens of us working feverishly to get him the best home, there is ultimately one voice speaking for him right now and that is mine - and I am saying this to protect Diego and not alienate anyone who is confused about his situation. There are many fabulous, beautiful people who know exactly what is going on with Diego, but there are always those few random people who make cuckoo claims - so just confirm with me if possible.Thank you!!!p.p.s. HAPPY LABOR DAY!!!

9/2/09 update from Kathy Christopherson re Diego follows. I hope Diego gets everything he needs ASAP.
On 9/2/09, Kathy Christopherson wrote:
Here is the latest on Diego! The good and the bad news. A GREAT OFFER IS ON THE TABLE FOR WHOMEVER WILL FOSTER OR ADOPT DIEGO – please read on!

I have raised a little money for Diego’s future, but it will go fast if we don’t get a foster very soon. Diego is being boarded at Bark Ave, but he is rapidly losing his spirit. I visited him yesterday and he wouldn’t even take a treat from me. He howled like a baby when the volunteer had to pick up all 70 pounds of him and put him back in yet another cage.

This dog is desperate for some real exercise, in a yard, with a foster who will donate a little time and energy to him – someone who can set up a strict routine and has a firm, dominant personality. Right now, Diego is not ready to be around other animals, so we desperately need to find an animal-less family. I would much rather put the donations toward food and toys for a month, rather than a cage with a hundred barking dogs. He’s filled with anxiety now, and his chances will diminish.

I’m going to get a behavioral assessment done by Brandon Fouché, courtesy of the very generous Lori Weise. And Delores Burton (personally trained under Cesar Millan of Dog Whisperer fame) at K-9 Campus has very generously made the extraordinary offer of one free behavior session for Diego (and his foster/owner.) You can check her out at http://www.k-9campus.net/ Delores was contacted by Cheryl Kendall, whose amazing testimonial is on the site. Delores has been known to make huge strides with dogs like Diego in just one session, so please let people know about this offer. Diego’s unique case has appealed to Delores, like many others, so she is stepping in to help.

Many of you know by now that I am not a rescue and do not have any resources to continue helping Diego. As much as I’ve done, it is your support and savvy and intervention that is keeping this dog’s chances alive. A few families have expressed interest in taking Diego, but they have animals in the house and Diego is too stressed and aggressive toward animals at this time. And until he gets some exercise and cage-less living (as Delores says, this is about 75% percent of the battle) his outlook looks bleak.

PLEASE DON’T GIVE UP ON DIEGO. We’ve gone this far. Now he needs someone to take that extra step for him. Any dog lover, especially one who is in the business of rescue, could hugely benefit from Delores’ session. She will also be able to assess if Diego needs Doggie Boot Camp for a couple weeks, or if he just needs a pack leader.

Saving Diego from death row is one big step, but seeing it through is the leap forward he needs!

Also, the Chip In account is still up at http://savediego.chipin.com/diego-dog-rescue Thank you so much for everyone who has so generously donated, financially and with support. I know everyone has a million things on their plate, so I want you to know that you are making a difference.
Love and Thanks,
Kathy

hey everyone,
I set up a "chip in" account for Diego, through a secure paypal transaction on the Dirty Dog Squad site. Some of you have already generously donated money, time, advice, so thank you so much! We have limited time, but with even small donations - we can extend boarding while we look for the proper home, and get some training for Diego so his second chance is a successful one. Please pass on and consider posting on facebook and myspace pages. And thank you for your patience, tenacity and love.

Subject: Diego - REDLISTED!!! one day left!!!! Please help

i'm begging you to post, cross-post, find anyone who will save Diego. He was due to be put down tomorrow (AUG. 28) at the West LA shelter, and I begged them to give me one more day. Diego is a beautiful Ridgeback/Shepherd mix, about 7 years old. I brought him out in the shelter yard today and he was amazing. Playful, happy, gentle. Diego is a large dog and he's strong. He may also need a little work with other dogs. The shelter suspects that he was a backyard dog, but he gives the distinct impression that he's housetrained, i.e. he went potty the minute he was let out of his cage. It's as if Diego knows he's going to be euthenized b/c he seemed unusually panicked in his cage today. I've seen him over the weeks and he did not behave like this - whimpering, asking for attention, as though he was begging for one last chance. I get the feeling the Diego would be just perfect for someone who can handle a large dog, give him exercise, and get him some training so he can be socialized with other dogs. We think he's worth saving, so please help!!! If you know any Ridgeback rescuers, please contact them as well, asap!

Subject: A bird emergency I think

My office is on 26th St. overlooking Madison Square Park. In the last two weeks I have found seven yellow warblers dead or dying on the sidewalk in front of my building. One I took in and it recovered and eventually flew away, but the rest were already dead. I think they are yellow warblers. I'll attach a picture of the lone survivor. (I'm not a naturalist, but at least I can tell you it's not a pigeon.)

I had thought they were flying into the windows and getting brained, as the one I rescued literally dropped from the sky at my feet. But a workman fixing the sidewalk in front just told me that the story is the are eating rat poison put out for the rats across the street. He claimed himself to have returned several out-of-it birds he picked up on the sidewalk to the bushes. Mind you, this is all on the same 100 feet of sidewalk. There are three out there right now. There must be many more in the area that I'm not seeing. No reason to think they're all coming to this one spot to die!

My guess is that the rat poison theory is wrong, as these appear to be insect eaters (to judge by the beak). But possibly some other poison has been spread for insects and it is getting to these birds? The apparent absence of dead sparrows and pigeons suggest that poison laying on the ground is not the cause. But I leave that mystery to the ornithologists.

Not sure who, if anyone to tell, or even, frustratingly, if poison is indeed the cause, but they are dying in such numbers that it seem clear something unusual is going on so I thought I'd make an attempt to let the bird-world know of this little tragedy. You're welcome to pass this on the the proper authorities.

Lisa wrote: My son found a stray dog in the neighborhood... The neighbors were telling him that they were going to call the pound to come and pick it up. Michael knew the dog would be put down because it was a pit and he didn't want that to happen. He ended up taking the dog and walking it around for weeks looking for the owner. We checked the pound to see if anyone reported her lost, I placed ads online that we found her, but no one claimed her. Michael kept her at our small apartment even though we're not allowed to have pets, and he was constantly trying to find her a home but was unsuccessful and now he moved to Hawaii with his sister and I'm left with this dog. We no longer have the apartment. I had to move in with my mom because my dad just passed away and I tried bringing the dog with me but my mom has a dog that is very dominating. I don't know what to do with her except take her to the pound and I really don't want her put down. She is friendly with everyone, kids, other dogs and even cats! She's a big girl and probably easily weighs over 100 pounds but, just because she's big doesn't mean she's not a sweet baby at heart. I took her camping with us last weekend up to Big Bear and she did so well in the car and didn't even get carsick on all the winding roads. At the apartment where Michael had her he would take her in the front yard and the neighbors would bring their dogs over to play. I truly wish I was able to care for her and give her a home, but I don't really have a home myself right now. I hope that you are able to help.
Thanks,
Lisa
