Crescent City CA: Zora needs rescue!

On Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 8:41 AM, Chows Plus + Scooter's Pals wrote:
PLEASE HELP CROSSPOST FOR ZORA!!!

Zora is in the Del Norte County Pound in Crescent City, northern Ca
coast on the Oregon border. The small shelter is completely full and
Zora is in danger of being PTS. She is approx 9 yrs old, extremely
friendly and appears to be healthy. She's made one thing quite clear,
she loves being with people and is very lonely in her kennel. We're
guessing she's an Akita mix and more on the medium size, weighs about
60 lbs. Zora deserves to live out the rest of her golden years. If
know of any possibilites for this lovely deserving lady, please
contact Tana at 2theresq@gmail.com.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Disclaimer:We make every effort to keep this information current. Our pages are updated in real time, which means photographs of our animals come off our site when an animal is adopted, returned to its owner, etc.

Due to the large numbers of animals received, returned to owners and adopted each day, we cannot guarantee that animals listed on this page will be available when you come to a County animal shelter to dopt that pet.

If you are interested in adopting one of our shelter pets, it is necessary that you come in person to the appropriate animal shelter housing that animal. Our animal care staff will tell you everything we know about the animal.

If you are unable to visit the shelter and want to know if a particular pet is still available for adoption, please call the individual animal shelter listed and speak to one of our representatives.

IMPORTANT: If you interested in an animal at one of our shelters, let our shelter staff know immediately! We need the animal's impound #, your name and phone number so we can log the information onto our computer system. This is the only way we know someone is interested in adopting that particular shelter pet. Don't wait! You may express your interest in an animal at any time, including prior to an animal's actual available date. ALTHOUGH YOU MAY EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST AT ANY TIME, IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY THAT YOU BE AT THE SHELTER ON THE DATE THE ANIMAL BECOMES AVAILABLE IF YOU WANT TO ADOPT THAT PET.

All animals adopted from County Animal Care Centers are spayed/neutered before they can go home with their new family. As we cannot spay or neuter all animals in advance of their adoption, you will be required to pay for your new pet and then pick him or her up the next day after the animal has been spayed or neutered.

Please keep in mind when viewing our photographs that some of the breed description information has been provided by pet owners turning in their animals. This is one of the reasons that we felt it was so important to actually show photographs of our animals.

Please do not leave e-mail messages if you would like to adopt a pet. This will not increase your chances of adoption as these messages are NOT answered 24 hours a day. We appreciate your understanding.

Global: Sign Petition: Save Orphan Bears: End Cruel Den Hunts

I just signed the petition "Save Orphan Bears: End Cruel Den Hunts" at link http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/534084459.

I'm asking you to sign this petition to help us reach our goal of 25,000 signatures. I care deeply about this cause, and I hope you will support our efforts.

Save Orphan Bears: End Cruel Den Hunts

Target: Prime Minister Vladimir Putin
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)
During Russia's annual bear hunt, hibernating mother bears are lured out of their dens by dogs to be shot and killed, leaving their infant cubs to freeze or starve to death.

Each year, den hunting leaves up to 4,000 cubs motherless. Some of these homeless cubs end up as pets to local villagers, while others are taken as cruel props for entertainment or to be eaten in restaurants. Most are abandoned and left to die.

You can give these tiny bundles of fur a second chance at life. Please urge the Russian Prime Minister to ban the cruel practice of den-hunting.

Den hunting -- waking hibernating bears, driving them out of their dens and then shooting the frightened and confused animals -- is not only cruel to the bears shot, but also to the orphaned cubs left behind.

Den hunting kills thousands of bears each year and orphans many thousands more. In some areas of Russia, and in Western and Eastern Europe, brown bears are already extinct. The bears being hunted in Russia are from the last healthy population in the world.

Subject: VERY URGENT: injured sweet Pit Bull female Camarillo kennel 203
To:
Cc: Jennifer Thaler

Hi all,

There is a young Pit Bull female at Camarillo shelter, she is in kennel 203 (but listed in 204). She is small size for the breed and a vet office staff favorite.

She was found outside a trailer park with a rope around her neck that she chewed through, and with a broken back and pelvis fractures.

Even though she is very injured, Dr. Koerner at Camarillo shelter thought she deserves a chance (they all love her there) and they have been treating her.

The vet is convinced that if she is given full kennel rest for 2 months she will recover. She can walk even now with all the injuries although she is in pain since they stopped the morphine (she has been vomiting all the food when she was on it so they decided to stop).

They asked me to please help them have her rescued even though they realize this is a lot to ask in terms of her care. But they feel she is so sweet she deserves it. She would be completely worth all the work to get her healed.

Please let Jennifer Thaler (Jennifer.Thaler@ ventura.org, cc-ed here) and me know if you can help. Patty at the vet's office asked to please try to find her a rescue by mid -week (end of Wednesday) the latest.

Thanks,

Olga

Product Description

In this heartwarming novel, author Greg Kincaid tells the tender story of how one very special dog changed the lives of his adoptive family—and an entire town—forever.

“Todd, they always want you to adopt a dog. That’s what they do. Besides, we don’t need another animal around here, and most definitely not a dog.”

When Todd McCray, a developmentally challenged young man still living on his parents’ Kansas farm, hears that a local animal shelter is seeking temporary homes for its dogs during the days leading to Christmas, he knows exactly what he wants for the holidays. His father objects, but Todd’s persistence quickly wins out. Soon the McCrays are the short-term foster family for a lovable pooch the young man names Christmas.

But what about all the other dogs who will be forced to spend the Yuletide season in cages? In the days that follow, Todd uses his special gifts of persuasion to encourage his hometown to participate in the “Adopt a Dog for Christmas Program.” What follows from his small act of kindness will teach his family, and his community, about peace on earth and good will toward men—and animals.

NYC Exclusive: Simmons + Safran Foer = SO DEF celebration for the turkeys

From: GirlieGirl Army <Chloe@girliegirlarmy.com>
Date: Thu, Nov 12, 2009 at 11:15 AM
Subject: NYC Exclusive: Simmons + Safran Foer = SO DEF celebration for the turkeys

A few weeks ago we told you about the horrific cruelties that commercially-raised turkeys are forced to endure on factory farms (re-read said blog here,) and how you can help alleviate their suffering by doing like Ginnifer Goodwin and "adopting" a turkey this Thanksgiving instead of eating one. This week, we want you to join us (GirlieGirl Army Founder Chloé Jo will be in the house) at a very special event celebrating compassion.

Imagine this: The Crystal Room at New York City's landmark Tavern on the Green. Everything is illuminated and the air is heady with the warm smell of spiced apple cider and unabashed compassion. You enter this sparkling legendary room filled with beautiful, compassionate people who would rather toast the magnificence of turkeys with a glass of vegan holiday nog than ever in a million trillion years do anything to contribute to their suffering, and your host, hip-hop mogul and Def Jam founder Russell Simmons greets you with a warm smile.

As you walk across the swirling floral carpets, you spy Jonathan Safran Foer sipping hot cocoa and eating a Babycakes vegan pumpkin cupcake in a corner. You're excited because he will be giving a special reading from his new book "Eating Animals" immediately following a decadent, family-style vegan brunch prepared by the renowned chefs at Candle 79.

The candy-colored walls, Tiffany stained glass and dazzling light-refracting crystals are assaulting all of your five senses (in a good way), and just then, in a brilliant burst of crystal-induced rainbows straight out of a Peter Max painting, there in the center of the room is Farm Sanctuary's President and Co-founder Gene Baur, regaling guests with tales of his more than two decades work making the world a more peaceful place for farm animals. Is this a dream, you wonder? How can so much compassion and delicious vegan food exist in one place? This is Farm Sanctuary's first-ever New York City Celebration FOR the Turkeys and you're invited— but you must act quick, as space is limited.

  • WHAT: Celebration FOR the Turkeys
  • WHEN: Sunday, November 22, 2009: Noon – 5 p.m.
  • WHERE: Tavern on the Green, Central Park at West 67th Street
  • COST: $150 per person
  • ATTIRE: Festive holiday
  • RESERVATIONS: Reservations can be made online at adoptaturkey.org or by calling 607-583-2225 ext. 221. Space is limited, so reserve now. The deadline is November 13. We regret that we may be unable to accommodate reservations received after the deadline. Confirmation and directions will be sent to all registrants.

The Adopt-A-Turkey Project seeks to end the suffering of commercially-raised turkeys by offering a compassionate alternative for Thanksgiving. Since 1986, Farm Sanctuary has rescued more than 1,000 turkeys, placed hundreds into loving homes through our annual Turkey Express adoption event, educated millions of people about their plight, and provided resources for a cruelty-free holiday.

Farm Sanctuary is the nation's leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, Farm Sanctuary has worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the "food animal" industry through research and investigations, legal and institutional reforms, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Farm Sanctuary shelters in Watkins Glen, N.Y., and Orland, Calif., provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming. Urbanhound Returns
November 14, 2009

Dear Urbanhounders,

Urbanhound is back!

A few weeks ago, we announced the end of Urbanhound. Your response was overwhelming: hundreds of you---devoted members and long-time users---wrote to express your condolences and to let us know what an important role Urbanhound had played in your lives. In eulogizing Urbanhound, the New York Times quoted one of our members lamenting "I don't know what we'll do without it,"

But then, just as we were getting used to speaking of Urbanhound in the past tense, we got a call from one of our favorite online retailers: FetchDog. We've long admired FetchDog for the quality of their products and their commitment to dog-related non-profits. By happy coincidence, FetchDog has long been an admirer of Urbanhound too.

To jump to the punch line: FetchDog has come to our rescue, and it's an ideal partner for Urbanhound. They're not only bringing urbanhound.com back to life; they're determined to give us the nurturing and attention we need to thrive. Indeed, they're already asking for your suggestions to improve the site. (See details to the right.)

Stay tuned over the next few months, as FetchDog's team revitalizes and improves urbanhound.com. We're hopeful you and your dogs will get even more out of our website than ever before.

Yours, Nina Munk

Calling all Urbanhounders!

We want to make urbanhound.com better than ever -- but we need your help.

Do you have a great idea? Can you tell us how to make our site a better resource?
Please email us at greatideas@urbanhound.com.

The Urbanhounder with the best idea wins a $500 FetchDog shopping spree!
Plus: five runners-up win a goodie bag of FetchDog toys and treats.

(But hurry...we need your ideas no later than December 31, 2009.)

11/13 update from Prfl Rescue:
Thanks Liz, yes he at Main Street Vet in Reisterstown, MD. They gave him a full exam today, checking his legs, because the people that were trying to catch him noticed he limped. I never saw it, but wanted them to check it out just in case. The vet today said she rubbed, flexed, and moved his legs around and didn't notice any damage now that would warrent xrays, finally some good news in my favor. LOL. They said he seems to be in happy spirits. And I'm glad he's not showing any aggression being that he has no clue where he is and he's stuck in a cage

Friday update from PRFL Pits And Rotts For Life Rescue Inc a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization:
Prfl Rescue Liz, he's still with us. Someone just offered to pay his neuter so that buys us a day or two to raise the funds, get sponsorship or find a rescue. Every day he stays at vet's office is costing $20 a day boarding. I don't have funds to put him in my kennel and already have 17 in there...

Subject: Balt, MD: Stray Finally Caught In Balt City Ghetto In Need Of Rescue/Vetting

Collin, somewhat named after the street he was roaming in, was just caught this evening, Wed 11/11/09. Cat rescuers and dog rescues were trying to find a way to catch him, but because he would turn his head, people were scared he was going to bite, so nobody ever caught him. I was contacted this afternoon about him and went there tonight pretty much believing I was going to get bit, but at least the dog would be safe. Collin did not try to bite at all. He did turn his head at one point, but when you have your mind set that your going to get this dog in your car, that's all your destined to do.

Collin is in need of rescue. He is a Chow/Shephard mix, pretty young and wags his tail at everything, even other dogs. Since I just got him tonight and took him straight to the vet, he has not been temp tested with other dogs, cats, or kids. But as I said, he wags his tail when a dog is around and one man walked right past Collin with his dog in Collins face and he didn't do anything but wag.

He is NOT neutered or vaccinated. If we can raise funds, that can be done. He only has until Friday to find rescue, otherwise he will have to go to the SPCA. That is something I don't do, but I was only going to catch the dog, not keep him.

If anyone would like to sponsor his vetting, that would make it easier for a rescue to take him in or for us to take him into rescue, please contact Susan at prflrescue@aol. com. He is in my name at the vets office, so you can also call the vets office and donate there towards his care--410-526- 7500. I told them to heartworm/lyme test him, do a fecal, pick the rest of the ticks off of him--20 were taken off tonight. Plus, he's costing for boarding.

If your a rescue interested in taking him in, contact Prflrescue@aol. com. If your wanting to sponsor his vetting or just donate towards it click here: http://pitsrotts4li fe.chipin. com/stray- found-needs- vetting. Thank you for anything you can help with.
