The Larimer Humane Society is continuing to search for Stewie, a miniature dachshund that has been missing since his owner was involved in a fatal car crash Wednesday morning.
Stewie is believed to be roaming an area just south of where the crash occurred on Larimer County Road 19, which is Taft Hill Road in Fort Collins, about a half mile south of Trilby Road and near the Coyote Ridge Natural Area.
Witnesses to the crash said they saw Stewie running south down Taft Hill Road moments after his owner, Jason Downey, 28, of Fort Collins, rolled an SUV off the road. Downey was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland where he died.
The Humane Society has been searching for Stewie since Wednesday morning, and an officer spotted him in a field Tuesday but was unable to capture him.
"Stewie was seen inbetween Taft Hill and Shields about a mile south of Trilby in the middle of a wheat field," Humane Society spokeswoman Marcie Willms said.
Willms said Animal Protection and Control officers continue to search the area for Stewie with rotating shifts. Officers are concerned for the dachshund's safety if he's not found soon.
"He's a pretty small animal," Willms said.
Willms said Downey's wife, Amber Downey, has also spent much of her time searching for Stewie.
An advertisement on Craigslist posted by Amber Downey asks for help locating Stewie, who is black with brown fur on his feet and around his mouth. He wears a blue collar.
"My dog Stewie is a miniature dachshund, last seen running south into Loveland on Taft Hill Rd. He was in the car when it rolled 3 times and i am VERY worried about what happened to him," Amber Downey wrote on Craigslist.
