If you or anyone you know can rescue any of these dogs please write back or give us a call at (509) 995-6592.

Speed is a 1 ½ years old Rottweiler mix.  He came to us from another shelter.  He passed our SAFER assessment and went up for adoption.  While on the adoption floor a customer took him out for walk and when returning from the walk and going through the lobby Speed got uppity with another dog and the person walking Speed put his hand in front of Speed’s face.  Speed bit the person’s finger.  Due to this bite we are unable to safely place Speed back up for adoption.

We have no history on Speed.  From what we’ve seen Speed is an affectionate, bouncy and goofy boy once he gets to know you.  He is energetic and loves to run. Speed seems to have high prey drive and therefore should not be placed with cats or small dogs. Speed is very food motivated and picks up on things quickly, he already knows sit and how to sit up pretty and boy can this guy jump he would be awesome agility dog.

Scout is a one year old Beagle mix.  Scout was surrendered to our facility because a family had taken her from their overwhelmed grandparents and they found out she was too much for them also.  Scout has previously bitten and broken skin at times when she doesn’t want to be picked up or moved and due to this history of biting we cannot place her for adoption

The previous owners described Scout as friendly, playful, active, hyper, and stubborn.  She enjoys playing catch, tug-o-war, and with children of all ages.  She’s smart and knows sit and shake.  She lived with another dog and is very interested in other dogs.  She’s always excited with new people and children.  She was usually left alone 6+ hours a day.  The previous owners did not leave her alone inside because she chews up stuff.  In fact she was primarily an outdoor dog even though she is fully housetrained and will bark at the door to indicate that she needs to go out.  While left alone outside she does have a tendency to chew and bark.

Tabby Ann is a 2 years old Mastiff mix.  She was originally surrendered because her family couldn’t afford to keep her and she doesn’t do well with young children.  We placed her up for adoption and a very nice family adopted her right before a weekend in which they were going to have company.  Tabby Ann was returned three days later, because they had issues all weekend of her being protective towards the guests.  While we’ve never had any issues with her here in the shelter, due to her breed and their protective tendency, we feel she would be best going to a rescue situation where they have the resources to screen potential adopters so that she doesn’t end up in the wrong hands.

Tabby Ann’s original owners had her for a year and a half.  They described her as friendly, playful, affectionate, loving, loyal, and protective.  They said she is active but settles down.  She likes to run and play fetch.  She lived with two other dogs; a Chihuahua and a Heeler and was good with them.  They had never seen her around cats.  She was kept primarily indoors and trusted loose inside during the 6 hours work day.  She is fully housetrained and will sit by the door to indicate she need out.  When Tabby Ann was outdoors unsupervised they kept her on a chain.  Tabby Ann knows sit, down, come, rollover, and ‘bang you’re dead’.  She enjoys chewing on baby toys, chew toys and leathery type toys.  She loves car rides, but does get sick.  And she loves baths.

Saki is a 3 year old whom we have labeled as a Kelpie/Basenji mix.  She was adopted from our facility over a year ago and then returned for jumping the fence and nipping at people while trying to herd them.  When she came back we assumed she was still ok to have on our adoption floor with guidelines as to who she could go home with.  Then we had a customer come in, look through the kennels, and then pull aside an employee to tell them about their experience with this dog.  Their friends had owned the dog (which was confirmed by the owner name they gave us and the owner name in our system) and while at their friend’s home for a gathering while playing with the children Saki decided to herd everyone and bit this lady in the process.  Due to this bite we pulled Saki off of the adoption floor and must now find another option for her.

Saki has been described as friendly, playful, timid/shy, and hyper.  She is an active girl, but does settle down.  She really enjoys fetch and tug-o-war.  She lived with children under the age of six and was good with them, minus her herding instinct.  She lived with cats, but would snap at them.  She does not do well with other dogs.  She loves car rides.  She’s been an indoor/outdoor dog who is housebroken.  While left alone 3 – 5 hours a day she was trusted loose inside, but not outside because she can jump a 4 foot fence.

Kita was adopted from our facility as a puppy.  She, recently at 6 years of age, was returned because she was attacking livestock.  Since she has been here with us she has not handled the kennel environment well.  She has barrier frustration and is head shy.  Due to her being head shy she has not passed our SAFER assessment; the very first part is holding the dogs collar while looking into it’s face and she won’t allow that to be done.  She has definitely improved with many dedicated volunteers spending time with her, but still is unable to get through that assessment.  She is not a dog we feel we can safely place on our adoption floor, but she is a dog that could be rehabilitated with a lot of dedication.

Kita’s previous owners described her as friendly, playful, affectionate, loving, and hyper with people she knows.  With strangers she is timid/shy, fearful, and aggressive as a result.  Her energy level was described as always moving.  She enjoys playing in the yard and romping with other dogs.  She’s lived with cats and does well with them.  She enjoys chew toys, digging, and loves car rides.  She has good leash manners.  She has been an indoor/outdoor dog and is housebroken.  While left alone for 8 – 10 hours a day she was trusted to be loose inside, but not outside due to the livestock.

Ziggy is a 4 year old Lab mix.  He had been surrendered to us originally in 2008 and didn’t last on our adoption floor for very long.  He was just recently returned 3 years later; for this owner to have him for 3 years he sure had nothing good to say about him.  He described the dog as protective and aggressive, aggressive towards dogs, cats, strangers, and children.  He said he does not like to be brushed and can jump 6 feet tall fences.  He said Ziggy growls if you take his food bowl or rawhide away and that he is aggressive towards other dogs around food and rawhides.  Lastly he informed us that Ziggy attacked a cat and tried to bite a person.  After having heard all these horrible things about this dog we were expecting a killer to walk through our doors, but as you can see from the picture this was far from the truth.

We have not had any issues with this dog.  He has been walked by staff and volunteers.  He has met other dogs on leash and had no issues with them.  He has passed our SAFER assessment with all 1’s and 2’s.  It seems as though the previous owner was frustrated with Ziggy, just wanted him gone, and blew things out of proportion.  Since we have not seen Ziggy in a home environment we don’t feel comfortable saying what the previous owner said was completely false so finding a rescue group to take him on, evaluate him and place him appropriately would be the ideal situation.

Ziggy is completely housetrained.  He can be left alone inside, just should not be left with other animals unattended.  He loves to play with a ball.  He knows how to sit, down, come, shake, and stay.  He loves to go on car rides.

Meet Cocoa! She is a 2 ½ year old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever mix.  She was surrendered to us because she was not getting along with the dog in her home.  She previously lived with a Shih Tzu and a puppy from her litter. Cocoa had a couple incidents in which she got aggressive with the families Shih Tzu around high value food; the owners felt like it was best for Cocoa to find another home. Upon more investigating, we found out Cocoa on two occasions had growled and went after the Shih Tzu over some steak that the owner was feeding them in the kitchen. Before this she had never had any issues with sharing any food or toys with the other dogs.  At the shelter she is very anxious and stressed; once Cocoa makes a connection with someone she seems to calm down quite a bit when around them and is very bonded to them. Her anxiety combined with her history with the other dogs makes her unadoptable at our facility

Cocoa is described as friendly, playful, affectionate, active, timid, and protective.  Her energy level is active but she will settle down.  She has lived with men and women, dogs (aggressive), cats (trees the cats), friendly with strangers.  She’s been kept indoors and outdoors.  She is fully housetrained; she’ll go to the door to indicate she needs out.  She is not trusted to be left alone inside as she likes to get into any available food.  She is trusted alone outdoors.  She likes to be a lap dog.  Her favorite activities include playing with water from the hose and chasing the laser pointer.  She likes to chew on bones.  She loves car rides.  Our volunteers describe Cocoa as quiet, shy, sweet, gentle, and sensitive.  They also said she is great to walk.

JJ is a 2 year old Labrador mix.  He originally came to us from an animal control facility so his history was unknown.  He was adopted and went to live with an older dog.  Everything was going great, but when the dogs would play JJ wouldn’t always listen to the other dog when he was done playing. After a week of having JJ in the new home JJ was trying to play with the other dog, the other dog was done playing and grumbled at him, JJ then bit the other dog bad enough that it required stitches.  And in the process the lady in the home tried to break the two up and JJ bit her, but did not break her skin.  This is why he needs to find a rescue.

The adoptive family described JJ as friendly, playful, and active but does settle down.  He loves to go for walks.  He lived with men, women and children ages 6 and up. He was kept indoors and outdoors and is fully housebroken.  He is not trusted alone outdoors because he will jump a fence and run.  He likes to chew on ice.

Steven is a 1 ½ year old Pitbull mix.  This sweet guy came to us as a stray.  While SAFERing him he did great except on the food assessment; he tried to bite the assess-a-hand.  He needs to find a rescue that can work with him on this behavior.

He is a young energetic boy!  He is very playful; he loves to play ball and enjoys playing in the snow.  He’s very smart and has already learned sit and stay.
