Please check out Bently, a lovely Shih Tzu mix that needs immediate placement. Bently is in foster undergoing treatment for kennel cough but his foster mom cannot keep him.  Please see the email from her below describing what a wonderful dog he is!  If anyone can take Bently into your group, transport can be arranged.  Bently is highly adoptable and just needs to get over his URI.  Please call asap!

Email from foster mom to volunteer coordinator:

Hi Daria -

I'm hoping that since I didn't hear from you that no news is good news and I don't have half a tree in my living room!

Bentley is such an amazing dog!   I'll send an email to Brittany so she can update his profile a little (for instance, he can entertain himself by throwing a toy & running after it; he is EXCELLENT in the car; he doesn't beg for food at the table - I could go on & on...)   I'll also post some more pics later.

I am staying at my parents house until tomorrow morning, but then i've got to get back to work.  I thought I had lined up another foster situation for him, but she doesn't feel ready (she lost her dog a few months ago).  I can't have pets in my apartment and I don't think he can stay at the store with his kennel cough.  But, of course, I'm in love with him and don't want him to have to go back to the shelter.  I have no doubt he will be easily adopted, but in the meantime I'm trying to figure out short term solution for him that keeps him out of the shelter.  Any ideas?   If all else fails I guess I could throw myself on the mercy of my landlord or just try to hide Bentley there for a few days (among his many stellar qualities he doesn't really bark and he's Wee Wee pad trained).  I could also post something on the Cornerstone Facebook page but I have a feeling that would open up the floodgates of potential adoptive families so I wanted to check with you first.

Thanks for all your help and for the amazing work you guys did though this entire Irene drama.

Miami and Los Angeles: The TSA Blog-Recent Snake,Turtle, & Bird confiscations at airports

Birds taped in socks.Photo credit:TSA

There is no mention by TSA (Transportation Security Administration) Blogger Bob of the animals' conditions upon seizure or of follow-up care done by US Fish & Wildlife, or other aspects of the animals' future. TSA tried to make these incidents of cruelty and trafficking sound like Dr. Seuss stories. One would need to ask USFW (http://www.fws.gov/) regarding animals' conditions and follow-up care and destinations.

Hamilton, IL: This poor cat was found this morning unresponsive.  We rushed him to our vet clinci where he is feluk/fiv neg and his bloodwork came back okay.  He is not responding but holding stable.  He is completely emaciated!!  We are not sure what is going on or what has happened.  He is on fluids and being hospitilized.  Then we got in a young female border collie who was a stray but hit by a car.  After xrays, she doesn’t have anything broken but is bruised and very sore.  She is on pain meds and also at the vet clinic.  If anyone can please help us with donation and/or rescue either of these 2 please contact me at westhancockk9@mchsi.com or contact our vet clinic, Hancock Vet Clinic, directly at 217-847-3911

NYC: Event 8/31 Rally at City Hall against horse carriage industry!

From: Carly Marie Knudson [mailto:newyorkclass@gmail.com]
Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2011 10:08 AM
Subject: Rally at City Hall TOMORROW!

It's time we send a message to the Department of Transportation that they MUST investigate the carriage horse industry after the series of tragic incidents we've witnessed this summer. It's been too long without action -- it's time we take to the streets and demand an investigation.

We will be hosting a rally TOMORROW at 11 AM outside City Hall to demand the Department of Transportation investigate the carriage horse industry now! Can you join us at the rally?

This rally will be a signal of the strength of our movement. We must protect everyone -- including the carriage horses -- from the potential dangers of this industry and prevent accidents like these from happening again. We are so close to making this investigation happen -- but we need to keep up the pressure.

Let's show the Mayor, City Hall, and especially the DOT that we mean business here.

Join us at the rally TOMORROW and demand an investigation into carriage horse industry here:

This is our second attempt to get the transport filled. I'm begging for drivers.
This transport is for Cowboy. He is a double dapple deaf and vision impaired Dachshund http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/18047032
Some of you may remember Cowboy from last fall or even drove a leg of that transport that came from Louisiana and went to Indiana. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting Cowboy in person, fell in love with him. He really captured the hearts of the couple that hosted him over night. Cowboy also fit right in with the fur kids, like he had been a part of their family since day one. Fast forward nine months and Cowboy is going back there. he's being ADOPTED!!!!
Please help be a part of the adoption process and drive a leg of Cowboy's transport on Saturday August 27th.  Cross posting permitted and appreciated. DO NOT POST ON CRAIG'S LIST  Thank you! This transport will be monitored. Contact me at tvschwartz @yahoo.com if you can drive a leg or have a question. Please let me know who you have driven for and if you belong to rescue group,if we don't know each other.
Thank you,

Carriage Horses Forced to Work Despite NYC Shut Down
From: Donny Moss
Date: Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 5:23 PM
Dear animal advocate:

Several hours ago, portions of NYC were evacuated for the first time in history, and the largest public transportation system in the country was shut down due to Hurricane Irene.   With conditions deteriorating, Mayor Bloomberg  implored NYers to stay home for our own safety and so that emergency vehicles can easily navigate the streets.  Downpours occurred throughout the day.

In spite of all of the above and the law which clearly states that carriage operators cannot work during "ice, heavy rain or other slippery conditions," dozens of horse-drawn carriage operators were working as of 4:30 p.m.   If history repeats itself, the horses will be forced to make the long, treacherous trip through the streets of midtown back to the "stables" when the storm intensifies.

As usual, the ASPCA, which collects an untold amount of money from donors in the name of helping the carriage horses, allowed the carriage drivers to leave the stables this morning and to work all day in the wet streets in spite of the law.

The ASPCA, which was founded to protect the carriage horses, continues to stand by and watch as the carriage operators to break the law.   They mock --  instead of support -- the advocates who are working tirelessly to take the horses out of harm's way.  And they continue to refuse to use their substantial clout, power and resources to shut this industry down, in spite of their own stance that horse-drawn carriages should be banned from NYC.

The horse-drawn carriage industry is also enabled -- if not empowered -- by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has blocked all efforts to take these horses out of midtown, killing bills in committee before they see the light of day.   In fact, Quinn has killed every meaningful animal protection bill introduced at City Hall since she became Speaker in 2006.

Following are pictures of horses working in the rain at about 3:00 p.m. today.  Please share this information with your friends who donate money to animal organizations and/or who vote in NYC.
Thank you.

Due to the impending Hurricane and concerns over the age of its facility, Liberty Humane Society is seeking immediate rescue placement for any of its adoptable cats and dogs currently being housed at the shelter.  Transportation can be arranged.  Many cats are already altered and all are up to date on vaccinations.

Please check out www.libertyhumane.org for pictures of available animals. Ariel is a sweet middle aged Jack Russell mix who loves everyone, even cats!   http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/20703556

Also recently available but not yet on Petfinder is Roxanne, a surrendered female Pug.  She is 10 yrs old and is a bit overweight.

See Duende's attached pic.  She is a gorgeous Linx point tortie Siamese (Siamese purists please feel free to give me the correct color!) who is healthy and ready for placement!  Sorry for the attachment!  Many wonderful cats are available!!

Any help during this crisis is greatly appreciated!

Hello Everyone:
I posted the email below to the LAtrappers yahoo group back in April.  I am recirculating this email as I have received many emails lately about cats testing positive for FELV and people rushing to find placement when they really do not have confirmation as to if the cat is truly infected with the virus.  Please read below and feel free to pass the information along to your contacts.
Thank you,

I brought a litter of kittens and an adult cat to Fixnation to be spayed/neutered and tested for FELV aka Feline Leukemia.   I was asked to complete a form and indicate whether I wanted the cat/kittens euthanized if they were to test positive on the Combo Snap Test for FELV.  I, of course, wrote in big bold letters "Do Not Euthanize if Snap Test is Positive for FELV".
There are false positive results with the Combo snap test due to cross-reactivity.  If you are taking feral or tame cats to fixnation and having them tested for FELV, please do not elect to euthanize them if the combo snap test for FELV comes back positive.  If you do euthanize them, you may very well be euthanizing FELV negative cats.
It is best to retest via the ELISA test sent to the lab and if the ELISA test is positive, test via the IFA test.  You can also skip the ELISA test and go straight to the IFA test, and if it is positive, the cat is considered persistently viremic and no further testing is needed.  If you test via the IFA test and it is negative, you have to test via the ELISA lab test.  If you have discordant test results, you cannot consider the cat FELV negative until you get results that match.
The ELISA test shows the presence of an antigen created by the cat's immune response to FeLV infection in the red blood cells, while the IFA shows this same antigen in the white blood cells. The difference is that the antigen only goes into the white blood cells at a later stage of infection, which is why IFA+ cats are considered persistently viremic while an ELISA+ / IFA- cat may have a transient viremia that can be completely fought off meaning they can build an immune response to the virus and later test negative on the ELISA test for FELV.

I rescued a cat last summer that tested positive on the combo snap test, positive on the ELISA test sent to the lab but tested negative on the IFA test. He later tested negative on the ELISA and snap test so he was deemed FELV- as he was able to build an immune response to the virus.  I rescued a litter of 3 kittens over the summer and 2 tested positive on the combo snap test and 1 tested negative.  I retested the kittens via the ELISA test sent to the lab and the IFA test, both tests were negative. The combo snap test was a false positive.
In summary, I do not believe in euthanizing a cat just because it tests positive for FELV.  I do not believe in euthanizing any animal unless he/she is suffering and cannot be helped. I do not expect everyone to agree with me about FELV and euthanasia but I wanted to make it clear that I personally do not advocate it.  I have rescued many FELV+ cats over the last 5 years, some I have kept and others I have found homes for. I am posting the information above to help you make an informative decision as there is a lot of misinformation out there about Feline Leukemia and testing protocols.  If you have never rescued a cat that tested positive for Feline Leukemia, the odds are that one day you will if you continue to rescue. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Hurricane Pets Rescue
Dear members:

Due to Hurricane Irene HPR is calling for emergency foster homes of all kinds, not just for dogs and cats.
We are all breed, so if you can temporarily foster any kind of pet, please we ask you at this time to please let us know.

We will like to be available for family pets for those pet parents that cannot afford to take their pets with them.
Low income families, people with disabilities, seniors that need help with their pets, will be priority, that said we will like to be able to help as many people as we can, but we all know that sometimes that is not possible, we will try our best.
Special needs pets will also be priority.
We will try our best to help NYC shelter like we always do, but for that we need people willing to foster, our current foster homes are overflowing.
We all know that more animals will go down at the shelter because of the hurricane so please step up to help.

If you foster a family pet, that pet will go back to his family as soon as the family is able to return to their homes.
If you foster a shelter pet the pet will remain in foster until adopted or until a permanent foster is found.
To our current foster homes if you can make room for a family pet that will be returning to his her home please let us know ASAP if you can assist in any way.

Also, If you can offer a safe place to crash for a family in need and their pet or pets in need, please also let us know so we can add you to our database.
Foster homes will be needed as well for the aftermath for displaced and injured pets.
Please HELP.

Our contact e-mail is HPRESQ@aol.com please e-mail us if you can help in any way.

A screening application to potential foster home is sent out, we do this for the safety of the pets that will be in your care, HPR will NEVER share your information with anyone, once you receive our screening application you can specified then the kind of pet you are willing to foster, special needs, no special needs and so forth.
You will remain on our database ONLY for disaster relief purposes, meaning that you will not become a regular foster home unless you specify otherwise on the application.

For all of you that will be affected by Irene PLEASE BE SAFE, our prayers are with you and whatever you do please DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND.
Here is a link with tips that may help you plan.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
Have an awesome evening everyone and God Bless.

Awesome. This little baby would have died if not for these wonderful rescuers.

From: ROY
On the Morning of May 18th 2011, my wife noticed a deer in our yard that appeared to be franticly looking for something in the rocks that form a wall on our property line in... Brush Prairie WA. When we first went out with our neighbors, we didn't see anything, but the deer wouldn't leave our yard. We went back to our house and watched, after a few minutes the deer came back.

We went out to the area the deer was concentrating on and could hear a baby fawn crying in the rocks. We moved some of the rocks and smaller boulders and saw a baby fawn's face among the rocks. He had apparently fallen into a crawl through in one of the gaps and was now trapped. The larger boulders were too heavy to move and we didn't want to have the rocks cave in on the baby deer.

We finally called our Clark County Fire District 3. The B Shift team came out and they were able to move the larger rocks out of the way with the Jaws of Life; enough to be able to reach in and pull the baby fawn out and reunited it with its momma. The fawn was probably stuck in there most of the night and quickly went to nurse off its momma.

One of our neighbors took some video clips of the fire department's rescue. I edited the clips into this short clip. After sharing it with some friends they thought that it was just too cute not to share with more people so my neighbors agreed to let me upload the final clip.  http://www.wimp.com/fawnrescued
