Re: UPDATE- Nico, Ally & Turtle
Hello Carrie,
Thank you for speaking to me today about these animals. Last week a friend of mine in Hamden CT passed away in his home leaving behind 2 dogs and a cat. One of the dogs was originally adopted by my husband Joe and myself back in 2001 and then adopted by my friend from me around 2003 when I had to work in NY. This friend passed with no Next of Kin and only a few friends. Joe and I have taken responsibility for the animals and are currently seeking solutions, particularly for the dogs who have been in the North Haven pound since Tuesday Jan. 31st. They are 12 and 13.
We both live separately in California right now but have plans to move back to Connecticut within a few months. Ideally we would like to find homes immediately for the dogs together but if we can only find a foster situation, Joe is willing to re-adopt one of the dogs, Nico, in June or July. I can possibly adopt the other, Ally, but not for several months.
Nico and Ally have been living together peacefully for almost 9 years and were deeply loved and very well taken care of. Nico, 12, is the "alpha" dog, protective, used to be fearful of strangers but has calmed down in her old age. She is a mixed breed medium sized dog, black (lots of gray now) and white markings, very smart, fiercely loyal, was trained to learn the basics; sit, stay, come. Barks at the doorbell, generally acts more like a "normal" dog than Ally. She was diagnosed with severe arthritis in her hind legs and has trouble with stairs. Last we heard she was having trouble walking too and was kicking her legs out.
Ally, 13, is also a mixed breed, black with white markings, with amazing blue-white eyes like a husky. We've always called her "bat ears" because they stick up straight and are large for her head. She is an unusual dog in that she has never required any type of training, she just tends to do what you ask naturally and doesn't cause trouble. In 13 years I've heard her bark only twice and I think it was to mimic Nico. She is a sweetheart (they both are!) although a tiny bit timid. When you go to pet her she instinctively backs off a bit but let's you do it anyway. She has a large mass on one of her back legs. The owner had gotten it checked out a while back and was told it wasn't anything to be concerned about but it certainly is fairly large and may be uncomfortable for her. She climbs stairs and walks just fine though and frankly hasn't shown her age much at all.
The dogs are probably very scared at the pound right now although the officer who brought them there has been in contact with us and says they're in decent spirits as far as he can tell. They aren't allowed to be together, which is a shame. It hurts me to say this but we think Nico may not have long to live. She has always been a bit stressed, being in charge of everything and often fearful as she is. So we worry that the pound is only making her worse. Ally has such an easy-going demeanor, the pound is most likely a minor setback in her life. Regardless if they had each other we think they both stand a better chance of surviving this.
The cat's name is Turtle and he's 16. I don't know anything about him except that he got along well with Ally and tolerated Nico (and vice versa). He's gray/brown tabby mix.
Here are some pictures - I only have two recent photos, the others are a few years old but are perfect examples of their personalities. (Particularly the one in the car where Ally has her head out enjoying the breeze and Nico is watching out for trouble). They're both grayer and older now than in the pictures from 2006 and 2007, which is hopefully evident in the recent photos.

UPDATE: Still need homes for 2 dogs, 1 is foster home!
Nico (12), and Ally (13), the two senior dogs whose owner died, now BOTH need homes again. The woman who agreed to take Ally has changed her mind, (she now wants a smaller dog).
They are both up to date on their shots now, and the vet has said euthanasia is out of the question, as they are too healthy. We cannot afford boarding for both dogs, and shelters will not take them.
Ally is very adoptable, DOES NOT BARK, gentle, sweet dog.
Nico only needs a home for 3 to 4 months, and WILL be re-adopted in June.
WE HAVE NOWHERE TO TAKE THEM NOW.
Joe Elliott at: (860-967-4229) gets back on a plane to California this weekend.

Hi all;
Nico was thrilled to be out of the pound, but will go back tomorrow if a foster or permanent home isn't found. Can someone take him in (even temporarily). The other senior dog, and the senior kitty were adopted!
Hey Donna,
Can you get this out as many places as possible? Nico needs placement tomorrow.
Thanks Hamden, Conn.

Re: UPDATE- Nico, Ally & Turtle
Thanks Carrie.
Here's an update on the situation of the 3 senior pets needing a home after their owner died. One dog (Ally) and the cat found homes. WE JUST NEED ONE FOSTER HOME FOR NICO THE DOG FOR 3 TO 4 MONTHS!

Joe picked her up from the pound today and she was overjoyed to see him. Her arthritis doesn't seem as bad as we first thought, she's walking fine, and jumped right into the car. She'll be getting her shots tomorrow (Feb 10) but then he has to bring her somewhere before returning to CA. He will be able to re-adopt her in June. We are also offering expenses up to $100/month for her.
Some info about Nico; she's mixed breed, medium-sized, very smart, trained in the basics. Used to be bossy and protective in her day but has calmed down a lot. She gets along fine with other dogs and tolerates cats (used to tease them a bit). These days she just wants to be loved and have a warm place to lie down, sometimes under the bed. She has severe arthritis in her back legs, and a large wart or lump on her front leg. (Hopefully we'll get news on that tomorrow).
Please contact Joe Elliott in Simsbury CT, with any information or help. Phone: 860-967-4229.

Joe Elliott is the main contact for right now, particularly if arrangements can be made this week. He will be in CT from Thursday until Saturday (Feb. 8 to 11).
He can be reached at 860-967-4229 or: josepi70@hotmail.com (at hotmail.com). He is more familiar with Nico than Ally.
I am also happy to answer questions or make arrangements. My name is Cheryl Elliott and my number is 203-887-2454 and my email is: cherylelliott01@gmail.com.
