We were horrified to learn that the owner of these 3 pups was a supposedly respected high school principal by the name of Rosa Martinez.    She has plead guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.    Her sentencing hearing will be this Thursday, December 11th, at 9:00 am, in the County Criminal Justice Center located at 1201 Franklin Street, Houston, TX  77002,  8th floor, court room No. 4, before Judge John W. Clinton.   If at possible, PLEASE make plans to attend.   The sentence will be determined by the judge, not a jury.   We need to show the judge that animal cruelty is a serious offense that the Houston community will NOT tolerate, and ask for maximum sentencing.

Importance: High

I am sure everyone remembers the email below received on the evening of 10-12-13 regarding the three severely injured dogs turned in to BARC by their owner.   Red Collar rushed to the rescue and picked up all three early Sunday morning.   After a long year with extensive medical care, all three dogs have recovered and been adopted into loving homes.   This case received national attention all the way to NY and even the UK.  You can read more about this story and see the news links AT THE FACEBOOK ALBUM HERE (warning -includes graphic photos)

Dr. Huddleston, who cared for all three dogs, representatives of Red Collar Rescue, and Rainey's adoptive parents will be present to testify.   Rainey, who lost two legs,  will also be in attendance sporting her new prosthesis which helps her walk.    Please attend to show your support not only for Rainey, Cyclone, and Stormy, but for ALL the animals whose ending is not as fortunate as theirs.

Subject: 10/12/13 - Three Small Dogs, possible cruelty, A1190728 with severe injuries - (graphic photos enclosed)
Importance: High

Available now for foster or transfer.

I am sorry to finish out Saturday with this very sad situation but maybe someone can give one or all of these pups a second chance at a better life.

These three little dogs came in as owner surrender today.   We have sent to HPD for possibility of cruelty charges but we have gathered all necessary information at this time and would love to get them out of the shelter.   Please be aware the following photos are quite graphic.  A1190728 needs vet care urgently to determine extent of her injuries and treatment options.  All three are very sweet and friendly in spite of what they have suffered through.

A1190728 – very sweet dog with severe injuries--owner said that she had gotten her leg caught in a rope and thought it was better until the leg fell off.  Dog is missing its leg from the knee down on back right leg and there is about 3 inches of bone exposed and dried out.  The left front foot has only exposed metacarpal bones stripped down to the bone and phalanges are missing completely and the bone is dried out.  Dog is walking on this foot with a limp. There is a very foul odor from the leg. These do not appear to be recent injuries.  She has thinning hair and hairloss over mid to lower back.  Skin scraping was negative.  Dog is very sweet and friendly.
